About the car.

About things a ten-year-old should have been able to leave to the adults.

Sarah knelt as comfortably as she could beside him.

“Ethan.”

He looked up.

“I'm sorry, Mom.”

Her heart broke.

“For what?”

“I know you said not to.”

She shook her head.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

He continued.

“I just didn't want you to lose your job.”

Sarah pulled him into her arms.

For a long moment, she held him tightly.

Then she whispered, “That isn't your job to fix.”

Ethan began crying.

“But I can help.”

“I know you can.”

She kissed his hair.

“And I love that you wanted to. But I don't want you thinking you have to save me.”

Marcus looked away.

Dean lowered his head.

Luis stood quietly beside the shelves.

For several seconds, the garage was silent except for Ethan's crying.

Then Marcus cleared his throat.

“Dean.”

The older mechanic looked up.

“Yes?”

“Let's get this lady's car running.”

Dean smiled.

“Already on it.”

The replacement alternator fit.

Luis confirmed the specifications before installation, and Dean inspected the wiring while Marcus organized the necessary parts.

The belt came from a local supplier.

The battery was charged and retested.

After installation, the charging system performed properly and the warning light stayed off.

While the Chevrolet was on the lift, Luis noticed that one rear brake light had failed.

He replaced the bulb.

Dean found an exhaust hanger that had become loose and would soon have caused another problem.

He secured it.

Marcus examined the tires and brakes, making notes about wear Sarah should monitor. He was careful not to tell her that the vehicle was perfect.

It wasn't.

The sedan was old.

There were future repairs to plan for.

But the immediate charging problem was corrected, and the car passed the checks the mechanics performed before returning it to her.

Throughout the work, Ethan watched from the safe area near the office.

He asked questions.

Marcus answered when he could.

Sometimes Dean answered.

Sometimes Luis explained a part by holding it where the boy could see without approaching moving equipment.

Ethan learned that the alternator helped supply electricity while the engine ran.

He learned why a worn belt could cause trouble.

And he learned that replacing a part was only one part of a good repair.

You had to understand why it failed.

Forty-five minutes after the work began, Marcus lowered the hood.

He turned toward Sarah.

“Want to try it?”

She looked nervous.

He nodded toward the driver's seat.

“Go ahead.”

Sarah climbed inside.

Her hands trembled as she placed the key in the ignition.

She turned it.
