Gasoline had soaked through the cardboard.

Through part of the blanket.

And pooled less than two feet from the heater.

The mother’s knees weakened.

Her son had been sleeping directly above it.

The biker pulled the bottle away.

“Everybody back.”

No one argued.

Not anymore.

He stripped off the thick leather jacket he had been wearing over his vest and wrapped it around the little boy.

The child stirred.

His eyelashes fluttered.

“Mom?”

The mother dropped to both knees.

“I’m right here.”

Her voice broke.

“I’m right here, baby.”

The boy coughed.

Once.

Then again.

The biker’s expression changed.

He leaned closer, listening.

The mother put one hand against her son's cheek.

Cold.

Too cold.

The biker carefully lifted the child.

She immediately grabbed his forearm.

“Put him down.”

He stopped.

“He needs to get warm.”

“I said put him down.”

The biker looked at her.

Then slowly lowered himself until he was kneeling rather than towering over her.

He kept the boy supported.

“You want to hold him?”

The question disarmed her.

She looked toward her son.

The boy had curled deeper into the enormous jacket.

His small hands clutched the lapels.

He coughed again.

The mother reached for him.

Then hesitated.

The biker understood.

“He’s heavier than he looks.”

“I know how heavy my son is.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

No argument.

No challenge.

He transferred the boy carefully into her arms.

The leather jacket remained around him.

The mother pulled it tighter.

That was when she saw the stitching inside the collar.

Five uneven letters made from faded silver thread.

MADDIE.

They did not look professionally embroidered.

The letters were crooked.

Childlike.

She touched them without thinking.

The biker saw.

His face changed.

Then police lights washed blue and red across the pillars beneath the overpass.

Someone had called.

Probably the men recording.

Maybe another driver.

A patrol car stopped.

An officer stepped out.

“Everybody stay where you are.”

The biker immediately raised both hands.

The mother remained on her knees holding her son.

The officer looked from the enormous tattooed man to the child wrapped in his leather jacket, then to the blue blanket lying in the snow.

“What happened?”

One of the men filming answered first.

“That biker ripped the kid’s blanket off and pulled out a lighter.”

The mother looked sharply toward him.

“That’s not what happened.”

The officer turned.

She swallowed.

“It is.”

“But it isn’t.”

That did not help.

The biker said quietly:

“Fuel leak.”

The officer looked toward him.

“Where?”

He pointed.

Another officer arrived.

The biker did not approach the heater again until invited.

The second officer crouched.

Smelled the bedding.

Looked beneath the cardboard.

Then immediately stood.

“We need everybody moved farther back.”

The first officer’s entire posture changed.

Within minutes, the area around the heater had been cleared.
