"Mr. Whitmore has demanded a confirmed passenger's seat and handled her belongings without permission."

The captain looked at Richard.

"Sir, is that accurate?"

Richard bristled.

"This is a misunderstanding."

The Black businessman seated behind the chairwoman spoke.

"I witnessed him throw her handbag."

A blonde passenger across the aisle nodded.

"So did I."

Another passenger added, "He also demanded she leave because she didn't belong here."

Richard turned sharply.

"That's not what I said."

The chairwoman looked toward the witnesses.

"Thank you. The crew will collect statements if needed."

The captain's expression became serious.

He turned toward Richard.

"Sir, you need to return to your assigned seat while we determine whether you can remain aboard."

Richard stared.

"Whether I can remain aboard?"

"Yes."

"Do you know how much my company spends with this airline?"

The captain replied calmly.

"That does not change my responsibility for the safe and orderly operation of this aircraft."

Richard looked toward the chairwoman.

She said nothing.

His jaw tightened.

Then he turned toward his seat.

But before he could sit, his phone vibrated.

He looked down.

The message came from his executive assistant.

URGENT. AIRLINE LEGAL COUNSEL HAS REQUESTED PRESERVATION OF ALL COMMUNICATIONS RELATED TO PREMIUM SEAT REQUESTS. CALL ME.

Richard's face changed.

He read the message again.

Then looked toward the woman in yellow.

She was quietly speaking with the cabin manager.

Not celebrating.

Not laughing.

Simply asking for details.

And for the first time, he wondered whether the entire morning had been something much worse than an embarrassing confrontation.

He wondered whether he had walked into an investigation.

The woman looked toward him.

Their eyes met.

She had seen the change in his face.

She did not know what his phone displayed.

But she recognized fear.

Richard stepped toward the aisle.

"I need to make a call."

The captain nodded.

"You're welcome to use your phone while we're at the gate, provided you comply with crew instructions."

Richard moved toward the galley.

His assistant answered immediately.

"Sir."

"What is happening?"

Her voice was tense.

"The airline's legal department has sent a formal notice."

"About what?"

"Passenger records. Executive travel arrangements. Consulting agreements."

Richard stopped walking.

"Who received it?"

"Several people."

"Which people?"

"Your aviation division, the travel office, and outside counsel."

He stared through the forward galley window.

Ground crew moved across the ramp.

A baggage cart passed beneath the aircraft wing.

Everything outside appeared normal.
