“You already decided the next charge before I committed the first one?”

Adams’s face reddened.

“Shut up.”

“No.”

Marcus’s voice grew colder.

“You wanted me on my knees.”

“I’m here.”

“You wanted my hands behind my back.”

“They’re there.”

“You wanted compliance.”

“You have it.”

“What you don't have is evidence.”

Adams leaned down.

“You don't understand the situation you're in.”

Marcus met his eyes.

“You’re absolutely right.”

For the first time, something in Adams’s expression shifted.

The answer was not fear.

Not defiance.

Something else.

Confidence.

Marcus was kneeling.

His arm hurt.

His own neighbors were filming him.

Yet he spoke like someone observing a process rather than begging to survive it.

Adams did not know what to do with that.

“Who are you?” he asked.

Marcus almost smiled.

“I told you.”

“Marcus Reed.”

“Yes.”

“What do you do?”

“Now you care?”

“Answer.”

Marcus looked toward the front door.

Still closed.

Interesting.

He wondered whether Robert had finally received the text.

Marcus’s phone was still in his SUV.

But one of the neighbors may have called.

Or perhaps someone inside had noticed the flashing lights.

He said:

“My job isn't relevant to whether you have lawful grounds.”

Adams laughed.

“Everybody’s a constitutional scholar when cuffs come out.”

Marcus did not answer.

The front door opened.

At first neither man noticed.

Susan did.

Her face changed.

Then the young neighbor beside her lowered his phone.

A gray-haired man stepped outside carrying a thick black presentation folder.

Robert Hale was fifty-nine.

Tall.

Former linebacker shoulders softened slightly by age.

Silver hair combed back from a lined face.

He wore charcoal slacks, a white dress shirt, navy blazer, and no tie.

Nothing on his clothing identified him as police.

He descended the porch steps quickly.

Then stopped.

The folder almost slipped from his hand.

His eyes locked on Marcus.

One knee on the driveway.

Arm twisted behind his back.

Adams above him.

“Jesus Christ.”

Adams turned.

“Sir, stay back.”

Robert stared.

Marcus saw recognition become shock.

Then fury.

“Let him go.”

Adams squared his shoulders.

“Sir, this is an active police investigation.”

Robert walked closer.

“I said let him go.”

“Do not interfere.”

Robert looked at the body camera.

Then Adams’s nameplate.

“Adams.”

The officer blinked.

“How do you know my name?”

“It’s printed on your chest.”

Marcus almost laughed.

The coincidence was too perfect.

Robert took another step.

Adams extended one arm.

“Back up.”

Robert stopped.

Not because he was intimidated.

Because Marcus caught his eye.

Don't escalate.

Robert understood.

He lifted both hands slightly.

“Officer Adams, before you make this substantially worse, I suggest you look inside this folder.”

Adams frowned.

“I’m not looking at anything.”

“You should.”

“Who are you?”

Robert inhaled.

“Captain Robert Hale.”
