She shook it politely.
"Beautiful event," she said.
He nodded.
"Very important cause."
"Yes."
He studied her gown.
"Quite an entrance."
She smiled.
"Thank you."
He glanced toward the windows.
"I hear you brought an impressive car."
She nodded.
"My own."
He laughed.
"Business must be good."
"We've worked hard."
His smile tightened.
For several seconds, he seemed uncertain how to begin.
Then he said, "I understand you've been reviewing some old county files."
She met his eyes.
"Among other records."
He nodded.
"Your father worked for the county, didn't he?"
"Yes."
He smiled sympathetically.
"I remember him."
The woman remained quiet.
The businessman continued.
"Unfortunate situation."
She looked directly at him.
"Which part?"
He hesitated.
"His employment dispute."
She nodded.
"Very unfortunate."
The president seemed to relax.
Then she added, "Especially the question of whether somebody used his signature without permission."
His smile vanished.
For a moment, the room seemed quieter.
Then he laughed.
"Well, that was a long time ago."
She nodded.
"It was."
He glanced toward the other guests.
"Surely we can leave old disagreements in the past."
The woman looked toward the enormous windows overlooking the lawns.
Then back at him.
"That depends on whether the records are accurate."
His expression hardened.
"Records don't always tell the whole story."
She smiled faintly.
"That's why engineers verify things."
He stared at her.
The words were perfectly polite.
But he understood what they meant.
She wasn't there to exchange compliments.
She intended to finish the review.
The businessman lowered his voice.
"I hope you realize how much damage careless accusations can cause."
The woman remained calm.
"That's why I don't make careless accusations."
He looked toward her.
She continued.
"I ask for evidence."
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then a donor approached and greeted the president.
His expression changed instantly.
He smiled.
Shook hands.
And began discussing the luncheon as though nothing uncomfortable had occurred.
The woman stepped away.
She could feel him watching as she crossed the room.
But she didn't look back.
Near the garden entrance, a local nurse approached.
The nurse was in her late fifties.
She wore a modest blue dress and a silver necklace.
The woman recognized her immediately.
They had known each other years earlier.
The nurse had cared for her father during his final illness.
For a moment, both women smiled.
Then they embraced.
"Look at you," the nurse whispered.
The younger woman laughed.
"It's good to see you."
The nurse stepped back.
She examined the beautiful gown.
"Oh, your daddy would've been proud."
The woman's smile softened.
