“Elena, sit down.”

She obeyed.

The professor placed a letter on the table.

Elena glanced at the heading.

Then stopped breathing.

It came from the independent economic research institute whose fellowship Inés had encouraged her to apply for.

Elena had submitted her application weeks earlier.

She'd prepared a research proposal, writing sample, references, and interview presentation.

The selection process included candidates from universities across Europe.

She hadn't allowed herself to expect much.

Now she stared at the letter.

Camila smiled.

“Go on.”

Elena opened it.

She read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

“Oh, my God.”

Camila laughed.

“Yes.”

Elena looked up.

“I got it.”

“You did.”

Her eyes filled.

The fellowship included a salary, research support, and the opportunity to participate in a team examining international infrastructure financing and economic development.

For the first time, Elena could continue her work without depending upon late-night restaurant shifts to cover every expense.

She stared at the letter.

Then began crying.

Camila handed her a tissue.

“I warned you about trying to survive on coffee and stubbornness.”

Elena laughed through tears.

“You did.”

The professor smiled.

“Now perhaps you'll have time to sleep.”

Elena looked toward her.

For a moment, the enormity of the change was difficult to understand.

A year earlier, she'd been a student working late shifts and wondering whether she'd have enough money to finish her degree.

Now she had a funded research position.

Savings.

And a chance to pursue the work she'd dreamed about.

But the most important change wasn't financial.

It was that she'd finally begun believing she could enter professional rooms without apologizing for belonging there.

She looked toward Camila.

“Thank you.”

The professor shook her head gently.

“You earned this through the application process.”

Elena smiled.

“I know.”

Then she laughed.

“But I'm thanking you anyway.”

Camila laughed too.

They embraced.

And for a moment, Elena thought about the restaurant.

The white tablecloth.

The crystal glasses.

The millionaire's smirk.

The moment she placed down her notepad and accepted his challenge.

At the time, she believed the decision might cost her job.

She hadn't imagined it would become part of a larger story about evidence, power, and the value of speaking when somebody expected silence.

But her future hadn't been created by Antoine's wager.

It had been built through years of studying, working, questioning, and refusing to give up.
