She had not seen Milo since the night captured on her security camera.

Laura brought him into the fenced yard with Bear.

Nancy almost did not recognize him.

He had gained weight.

His coat looked cleaner.

Most striking was the difference in the way he held himself. The constant readiness to escape had softened.

Nancy sat in a patio chair and allowed Milo to decide whether to approach.

He smelled her shoe.

Then moved away.

“That’s him,” she said quietly.

Laura smiled.

“Definitely.”

Nancy had brought something in the back of her SUV.

The stuffed dog.

Her family had never thrown it away after seeing the footage. Instead, they brought it back inside, and Nancy had kept it in a spare room because discarding it suddenly felt wrong.

“I thought maybe you’d want it,” she said.

Laura was unsure.

She did not want to turn Milo’s recovery into an experiment.

Eventually they placed the toy near one side of the yard and let the dogs outside without drawing attention to it.

Bear ignored it completely.

Milo did not.

He stopped several feet away.

His head tilted.

Then he approached.

Nancy held her breath.

Milo smelled one front paw.

Then the face.

He moved around the body slowly.

For a moment, Laura wondered whether he would lie beside it the way he had on the sidewalk.

He did not.

Milo looked toward Bear.

The older dog was lying in a patch of afternoon sun near the fence.

Milo walked away from the stuffed animal.

He crossed the yard.

Then he settled beside Bear, close enough that their shoulders touched.

Nancy wiped at her eyes.

Laura pretended not to notice.

The stuffed dog had not lost its meaning because Milo no longer needed to lie beside it.

If anything, the opposite was true.

On that cold October night, it had been enough.

Not alive.

Not warm in the way another body would have been.

Not capable of choosing him.
