Not Atlanta.
Baltimore-Washington International.
On his first day, the instructor showed a historical case.
Marcus Hayes.
Eli almost laughed.
The instructor did not know.
Video played.
His great-grandfather in cuffs.
Eli had seen it dozens of times.
But this time he watched differently.
He was wearing a trainee uniform.
The instructor paused just after Vance refused ID.
“What has Officer Vance done wrong yet?”
Hands rose.
One recruit:
“He profiled him.”
Instructor:
“Maybe. What can we prove from footage?”
Another:
“He refuses available verification.”
“Good.”
“Anything else?”
“He escalates certainty without evidence.”
“Good.”
Instructor pointed at screen.
“This is the moment.”
“Not the handcuffs.”
“Not the radio.”
“This.”
“He has cheap path to resolve uncertainty.”
“He refuses it.”
“Why?”
A trainee said:
“Ego.”
Instructor nodded.
“Likely.”
“Bias.”
“Possible.”
“Pressure.”
“Possible.”
“Maybe he thought ID fake.”
“Possible.”
“But what procedure answers all those possibilities?”
“Check.”
“Yes.”
Eli wrote nothing.
He knew.
After class, instructor approached.
“You’re Hayes.”
Eli froze.
“Yes, sir.”
“Related?”
“My great-grandfather.”
The instructor’s eyes widened.
“Captain Marcus Hayes?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you say?”
Eli almost smiled.
“Would it have changed training?”
The instructor stared.
Then laughed.
“Okay.”
“That was good.”
Eli called Naomi.
“Grandma.”
“Yes?”
“They showed Grandpa.”
“Of course.”
“I used your line.”
“What line?”
“Would it have changed training?”
She laughed.
“Your great-grandfather would be proud and annoyed.”
“Perfect.”
Eli became officer.
His first year was uneventful.
Lost luggage disputes.
Public intoxication.
Domestic arguments between travelers.
Trespassing.
People angry about missed flights.
A surprising number of adults becoming unreasonable around boarding groups.
Then one morning, about six months after probation ended, dispatch reported suspected military impersonator near gate.
Eli felt something almost supernatural.
Not fate.
Memory.
A passenger had called saying a man in decorated military uniform was soliciting donations and appeared fraudulent.
