The older man placed handcuffs around her wrists.
Then pushed her toward the table.
Her elegant gown rustled against the wood.
Several people nearby turned.
The rookie stared.
"Sir, what are we arresting her for?"
The senior officer snapped, "Obstruction."
The woman looked directly at him.
"Obstruction of what?"
Then came the slap.
The sharp sound.
The stunned silence.
And the moment the senior officer crossed a line even his younger partner could no longer pretend not to see.
When the officer emptied her purse and the FBI credentials fell onto the table, the rookie understood that the situation was even more serious than he'd feared.
But the badge wasn't what convinced him that his partner was wrong.
He had already seen that.
The badge simply made it impossible for the older officer to hide behind the assumption that nobody important would care.
The federal team reacted within seconds.
The agent in the navy baseball cap approached from the left.
His colleague came from the opposite side of the path.
Both identified themselves clearly.
They instructed the senior officer to step away from the handcuffed woman.
The rookie immediately moved back.
His hands remained visible.
The older officer hesitated.
Then began protesting.
"She was interfering with an investigation!"
The lead federal agent kept his voice firm.
"Step away from her."
The officer gestured toward the table.
"She had suspicious property!"
The federal agent looked toward the open credential wallet.
Then toward the woman.
"Are you injured?"
She turned her face slightly.
Her cheek was flushed.
"I'm able to speak. He struck me while I was restrained."
The federal agent nodded.
Then looked toward the rookie.
"Do you have the key for those handcuffs?"
The young officer swallowed.
"Yes, sir."
"Please remove them carefully, unless there's some independent legal basis requiring continued restraint that you can identify."
The rookie looked toward his partner.
The senior officer said nothing.
The younger man stepped forward.
His hands trembled as he unlocked the cuffs.
The woman brought her arms around slowly.
Her wrists ached.
She flexed her fingers.
Then looked down at the beautiful diamond bracelet resting against her skin.
A small part of her felt strangely detached.
An hour earlier, she'd been standing beneath chandeliers discussing financial contributions with wealthy executives.
Now she was beside a picnic table recovering from an assault by a police officer.
The difference between those two worlds seemed almost absurd.
The lead federal agent turned toward the senior officer.
"You need to remain here while the circumstances of this incident are addressed."
The officer looked furious.
"You're not arresting me."
