“You mean my property?”

She disappeared over the fence.

The Homeowner stood beneath the porch.

Water still dripping from his swim trunks.

Phone against his ear.

Heart pounding much harder than his voice revealed.

The dispatcher asked whether the person was armed.

“No.”

“Did she threaten you?”

“Not physically.”

“Do you know what the syringe contains?”

“No.”

“Do not touch it.”

“I won’t.”

“Are there children present?”

“No.”

That question hit him.

His Daughter.

She had been swimming in the same pool yesterday.

Her towel had been on the same chair.

Her plastic goggles usually sat in the storage basket beside it.

He closed his eyes.

The anger finally arrived.

Not explosive.

Cold.

If his Daughter had been home, she might have picked it up.

If a neighborhood child had been visiting, one careless second could have turned a malicious setup into something much worse.

That thought changed the entire event.

This was no longer merely about being framed.

It was about somebody placing a dangerous object where children lived.

The first patrol car arrived in nine minutes.

A second followed soon after.

The Homeowner opened the side gate remotely.

Two officers entered.

He remained near the porch.

One officer asked him to explain from the beginning.

The Homeowner did.

Slowly.

Then showed the footage.

The officers watched without speaking.

The first clip.

The second.

The fence.

The pool deck.

The audio.

The younger officer looked toward the towel.

“She placed something there?”

“Yes.”

“Have you touched it?”

“No.”

“Anyone else been near it?”

“No.”

The officer nodded.

“Good.”

They secured the area.

The Homeowner moved inside.

Through the glass doors, he watched them document the lounge chair.

One officer used gloves and an evidence container.

The Homeowner deliberately looked away.

He did not need to watch.

His hands shook slightly now.

Delayed adrenaline.

He poured water.

Missed the glass.

Swore quietly.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

The HOA President.

He almost declined.

Then remembered the cameras.

His home system also recorded exterior porch audio, not phone calls.

He switched the phone to speaker and started a local recording after the required notification tone generated by his phone settings.

“Homeowner.”

Her voice had changed.

Calmer.

Controlled.

“Before this gets completely out of hand, I think we should speak like adults.”
