Her looking toward the street.

Then the slap.

Then the scream.

The audio was clear.

"You'll see."

Patricia's own voice.

Then Marcus:

"Patricia, leave."

Then the siren.

Officer Hayes looked at her.

"Ma'am, I'm going to ask you one more time."

She stared at the ground.

"Did Mr. Reed strike you?"

"No."

The homeowner closed his eyes.

The word hung in the air.

No.

The accusation was finished.

But the consequences were just beginning.

Officer Hayes asked Patricia for identification.

She gave it.

He asked whether she wanted medical attention.

"No."

"Do you want to make a formal complaint?"

She hesitated.

"No."

"Why?"

She said nothing.

Officer Hayes looked at her.

"Because the evidence doesn't support your original statement?"

She remained silent.

The officer wrote something in his notebook.

Then he looked at Marcus.

"Sir, do you want to file a report?"

Marcus looked toward Daniel.

His attorney had arrived during the confrontation.

Daniel nodded slightly.

Marcus answered.

"Yes."

Patricia looked at him.

"You don't have to do this."

Marcus stared at her.

"You came onto my property and accused me of hitting you."

"I was scared."

"No."

"You don't know what I felt."

Marcus shook his head.

"I know what you did."

The officer stepped between them.

"That's enough."

Patricia began crying.

But Marcus didn't react.

He had learned something important.

Not every display of emotion required a response.

Sometimes the best thing you could do was let the evidence speak.

The police report was completed.

Patricia left.

Marcus stayed outside.

Daniel stood beside him.

"How are you?"

Marcus looked exhausted.

"Angry."

"That's reasonable."

"I don't want revenge."

"Good."

"I just want this to stop."

Daniel nodded.

"It may not."

Marcus looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

"Because a false assault allegation can become a civil matter."

Marcus stared.

"You think she'll sue me?"

"I think we should prepare for anything."

The next morning, Marcus received an email from Patricia's attorney.

The subject line was:

DEMAND FOR PRIVATE RESOLUTION

Marcus read it.

Then laughed.

Daniel didn't.

"What?"

"She wants you to sign a confidentiality agreement."

"Why?"

"She wants the incident kept private."

Marcus looked at the email.

"What does she offer?"

"Nothing."
