"ไผ้ทใใๆ้ใใใใ ใใฆใใใใใใงใใใใใ"
Chairwoman, may I have a moment of your time?
The chairwoman smiled.
"ใใกใใใงใใ"
Of course.
The waitress straightened.
Then said carefully, "ใใฎๅคใฎใใจใใใใฃใจ่ใใฆใใพใใใ"
I've thought about that evening for a long time.
The chairwoman listened.
The young woman continued.
"ๆๅใฏใๆฅใใใใใฃใใงใใ่ชๅใๆฅๆฌ่ชใ่ฉฑใใชใใใจใๆชใใใใซๆใใพใใใ"
At first I was ashamed. I felt as though not speaking Japanese was something wrong with me.
The chairwoman's expression softened.
The waitress took a breath.
"ใงใไปใฏใ่ชๅใฎใใใซๅๅผทใใฆใใพใใ"
But now I'm studying for myself.
The chairwoman smiled.
"ใใใไธ็ชๅคงๅใงใใญใ"
That's what matters most.
The young woman laughed.
"Did I say it correctly?"
"Beautifully."
The waitress grinned.
Then looked toward the training kitchen.
"I'm applying for a culinary exchange placement in Kyoto."
The chairwoman's eyes widened.
"Really?"
She nodded eagerly.
"I want to see the places you told us about."
The chairwoman smiled.
"Then I hope you have an extraordinary experience."
The waitress hesitated.
"Can I ask one thing?"
"Of course."
"When I get there, what should I remember?"
The chairwoman considered.
Then smiled gently.
"Ask questions."
The young woman nodded.
"Listen carefully."
Another nod.
"Don't pretend to know what you haven't learned."
The waitress laughed.
"And?"
The chairwoman looked toward the elderly chef.
"And if someone assumes you don't belong, remember that their assumption is not the end of your story."
The young woman's eyes filled.
"Thank you."
The chairwoman smiled.
"You're welcome."
For several seconds, they stood together.
Two Black American women.
One the controlling owner.
One an ambitious employee beginning a new stage of her career.
Neither had become more deserving of respect because she learned Japanese.
The language had opened opportunities.
But their dignity had never depended on speaking it.
That was the lesson the billionaire failed to understand.
And it was the lesson the chairwoman hoped the next generation would carry forward.
Two years after the confrontation, the restaurant group celebrated the fifteenth anniversary of its first Manhattan location.
The dining room had changed very little.
The wooden panels were carefully maintained.
The shoji screens had been restored by experienced craftsmen.
The large paper lantern above the private dining table had been replaced with one made using traditional techniques.
