“What clientele?”
The manager’s cheeks reddened.
She knew she had gone too far.
Instead of retreating, pride pushed her forward.
“Our established clients.”
“I’m asking to purchase shoes.”
“It isn’t only about purchasing.”
“What else is it about?”
The manager glanced at the feather stole.
The gown.
The diamonds.
Her eyes became dismissive.
“We represent a specific image.”
The young associate whispered:
“Ma’am…”
The manager raised one hand.
The Black woman heard everything.
She remained calm.
“Do I conflict with that image?”
The manager exhaled.
“I think we have already spent enough time on this.”
Then she reached forward.
The Black woman had lifted the crystal shoe again.
The manager snatched it from her hand.
Not gently.
The crystals caught against the feather stole for a fraction of a second.
The young associate gasped.
The manager threw the shoe back into the box.
It landed sideways.
A crystal buckle struck the edge.
A sharp sound echoed across the marble.
The Black woman looked down.
The room changed.
The insult was no longer subtle.
The manager shoved the box several inches away across the counter.
“Those aren’t for you.”
No qualification now.
The Black woman stared at the shoe.
Then at the manager.
Her voice stayed remarkably quiet.
“Appropriate because of the price…”
She paused.
“…or because of who you decided I was when I walked in?”
Nobody moved.
The manager’s face hardened.
“Don’t make this something it isn’t.”
“What is it?”
“A customer-service decision.”
“Then explain it.”
“I don’t need to explain store policy.”
“What policy?”
The manager reached for the Black woman’s payment card, which had been placed beside the presentation box after the associate requested it to begin the fitting authorization.
The manager picked it up.
Black metal.
No visible bank logo from her angle.
Heavy.
She looked at it and scoffed.
Then slapped it onto the marble.
The sharp crack made several customers flinch.
“I think we’re done here.”
The Black woman looked at her card.
The manager pointed toward the entrance.
“Security.”
The guard looked startled.
The Black woman slowly turned her head toward him.
He did not move.
The manager repeated:
“Security.”
The guard approached uncertainly.
“Is there a problem?”
“Yes.”
The manager gestured toward the Black woman.
“Escort her out.”
The guard looked at the elegant customer.
Then the manager.
“What happened?”
The manager’s face tightened.
“I gave you an instruction.”
The Black woman finally showed emotion.
