Yet he does not use that moment to crawl farther onto the mattress.

He simply reestablishes the same position.

Chest at the edge.

Head hanging.

Eyes closing.

Sleep.

The Cycle Can Repeat Several Times

Sleep.

Slide.

Wake.

Pull backward.

Sleep again.

From across the kennel, it can look almost like the same few seconds repeating throughout the night.

Mochi is not falling completely off the bed.

But he is never quite secure on it either.

His Neck Pain Needs Careful Assessment

“Neck pain” can have many causes.

Age-related degenerative changes may contribute.

Muscles and soft tissues can hurt.

Spinal problems can produce pain and, in some cases, neurologic deficits.

A dog with both neck discomfort and limb weakness deserves careful veterinary assessment because the combination may provide important information about what is happening.

Mochi's sleeping posture alone cannot diagnose the cause.

Front-Leg Weakness Is Especially Important

The front limbs do much more than walk.

They support a large portion of a dog's body weight.

They help control lying down.

They push the body upright.

They stabilize the shoulders while the head and neck move.

For Mochi, weakness in those limbs means every correction at the edge of the mattress costs more effort.

His Pekingese Build Adds Another Consideration

Pekingese are brachycephalic dogs, meaning they have shortened facial anatomy.

That makes breathing position especially important to monitor.

A posture that places the head and neck awkwardly should not simply be considered cute or harmless because Mochi chooses it.

Staff need to make sure his breathing remains comfortable and unobstructed.

Any increased respiratory effort, unusual noise, color change, distress, or inability to settle would require attention.

The Bed Itself Becomes Part of the Problem

A thick bed seems like the obvious choice for an older dog with painful joints.

But height matters.

If Mochi's head hangs from a high edge, there is farther to fall if he slides.
