Dad did not negotiate.
He said:
“Okay.”
Renee stayed with her sister.
Malik and Zoe eventually split time between her and their father, who moved closer after hearing more about what happened.
January became strange.
School resumed.
People knew something had happened because families always know things.
I told two friends.
By week three, half my grade knew.
Someone said:
“Your stepmom smashed your Christmas tree?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
I hated question.
There was no answer that fit hallway.
“Because she got mad.”
Then one girl asked:
“Did your grandma really smash a gingerbread house?”
I stared.
“Who told you?”
“My mom goes to church with Ms. Renee.”
Of course.
“Yes.”
“That’s awesome.”
“No.”
I said.
“It wasn't.”
That surprised her.
“But she defended you.”
“She did.”
“It still sucked.”
Both could be true.
Grandma Pearl herself agreed.
“I should not have broken the gingerbread house.”
I stared at her across kitchen table one Saturday.
“You said you weren't deeply ashamed.”
“I’m allowed complexity.”
I laughed.
She continued:
“It felt satisfying.”
“Was not mature.”
“Would not recommend it as conflict-resolution strategy.”
I smiled.
“Would you do it again?”
She drank tea.
“Next question.”
That was Grandma.
Renee apologized formally two weeks after Christmas.
She asked Dad whether she could write me a letter.
He asked me.
I said yes.
The letter was four pages.
She did not blame me.
That mattered.
She wrote:
Amara,
I am sorry I destroyed the Christmas tree and your mother’s ornaments.
I knew they mattered to you.
That is part of why I did it.
Writing that makes me ashamed, but I don't want to hide behind “I was angry.”
I wanted to hurt what I thought was hurting me.
The ornaments were not hurting me.
You were not hurting me.
I felt insecure in a family with a history I could not become part of by changing decorations or creating new traditions.
Instead of admitting that, I treated your love for your mother like rejection of me.
You are a child.
You never owed me the role of mother.
I also said cruel things about Camille because I resented the fact that she remained important.
That was wrong.
I am sorry.
I do not expect you to forgive me because I apologized.
I hope someday you believe I mean it.
Renee.
I read it.
Then put it in drawer.
Dad asked:
