Not at the young man.

The officer’s face tightened.

The captain stopped several feet away.

His eyes went to the young man’s dusty uniform knee.

Then to the local officer.

Then to the credential wallet lying beneath the shopping cart.

“What happened here?”

The local officer squared his shoulders.

“Possible impersonation.”

The captain stared.

“Impersonation of what?”

“State official.”

The captain looked at the young man again.

Then at the ribbons.

Then back.

“Officer.”

His voice became very controlled.

“Step away from him.”

The local officer blinked.

“Sir, I’m conducting—”

“Step away.”

The words were not shouted.

They did not need to be.

The local officer moved back one pace.

The captain immediately bent down.

Not to the young man.

To the credential wallet beneath the cart.

He picked it up.

Brushed dust from it.

Closed it.

Then extended it toward the young man.

The young man took it.

“Thank you, Captain.”

The local officer’s face changed.

The captain looked at him.

“You did not verify this?”

The officer swallowed.

“I was in the process—”

“No.”

The young man spoke quietly.

Everyone turned.

He looked at the captain.

“He had it.”

The local officer snapped:

“I knocked it away because he reached—”

The captain lifted a hand.

The local officer stopped.

The captain turned back to the young man.

“Are you injured?”

“No, sir.”

“Did he strike you?”

The young man hesitated.

The local officer’s eyes fixed on him.

The crowd waited.

The young man answered carefully.

“He pushed my shoulder twice.”

“Anything else?”

“No.”

The captain nodded.

Then looked at the young man’s knee.

“You can stand.”

The young man did.

His leg had gone partly numb.

He stumbled slightly when he straightened.

One of the state officers instinctively reached toward him.

The young man steadied himself.

“I’m fine.”

The captain looked toward the local officer.

“Do you know who this is?”

The officer’s jaw moved.

“No, sir.”

The captain’s voice stayed measured.

“That was the reason you verify identification.”

The local officer said nothing.

The captain continued.

“This man is under state escort to the Capitol.”

The officer’s expression drained.

The captain looked toward the young man.

Then back.

“He is scheduled to receive the Governor’s Distinguished Public Service Medal this afternoon.”

The parking lot became completely silent.

Even people who had been whispering stopped.

The local officer stared.

The young man looked away.

This was exactly what he had not wanted.

Status replacing facts.

The captain continued.

“Our convoy was sent to transport him.”
