There it was.
The sentence.
The general heard it too.
“Say that again.”
The officer looked confused.
“We didn’t know who he was.”
The general’s expression became almost blank.
“That should have made you verify.”
Silence.
“Not improvise.”
The Latina officer looked down.
The homeowner studied the senior officer.
“If you had known who I was, would you have handled this differently?”
The officer hesitated.
That hesitation answered.
The homeowner nodded.
“Exactly.”
The general looked toward the aide.
“Call the command office.”
The Black homeowner lifted one hand.
“No.”
The general turned.
“No?”
“I’m not missing the briefing because of this.”
The general stared at him.
“You were just physically detained at your own house.”
“I know.”
“We can delay.”
“No.”
The homeowner looked toward the officer.
“He’s already taken enough of my morning.”
The officer flinched.
The general’s expression softened slightly.
The homeowner continued:
“Have somebody preserve the body-camera footage.”
The Latina officer nodded almost automatically.
“Yes, sir.”
The senior officer shot her a look.
The homeowner saw it.
“So did she.”
The officer turned back.
“What?”
“You looked at her when she agreed.”
“I didn’t—”
“You did.”
The Black homeowner stepped one pace closer.
His voice remained quiet.
“You’re still thinking about who challenged you instead of what happened.”
The officer said nothing.
The general looked toward the two SUVs.
“We need to go.”
The homeowner nodded.
Then looked toward the lawn mower.
The pull cord hung loose.
He had been ten minutes from fixing it.
A ridiculous thought entered his mind.
He almost laughed.
The general noticed.
“What?”
“My mower.”
The general looked at it.
“You’re thinking about a lawn mower right now?”
“I finally figured out what was wrong with the carburetor.”
The general stared.
Then laughed once despite himself.
The tension broke for half a second.
The homeowner picked up his toolbox.
The general reached for it.
The homeowner pulled it away.
“I can carry a toolbox.”
“Apparently that caused trouble.”
The general’s humor disappeared again.
The homeowner looked toward the officer.
“So did existing.”
Then he carried the box into the garage.
The patrol officer stood frozen.
The neighbor stepped backward.
