Not because of the police.

Because of the key.

CHAPTER THREE

The Silent Call

Daniel didn't dial 911 verbally.

He used the emergency text service.

He typed quickly.

PRIVATE PROPERTY.

UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY.

PROPERTY DAMAGE.

SUSPECT HAS UNKNOWN MASTER KEY.

Then he added the address.

He pressed send.

Elaine watched him.

“What did you say?”

“Nothing.”

“You called them?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Elaine looked toward the gate.

Her hand tightened around the keyring.

That was the moment Daniel noticed something.

There were four keys.

One was modern.

Two were ordinary.

The fourth was different.

Long.

Darkened.

With a small stamped number near its head.

Daniel had seen that numbering system before.

He didn't know where.

But it bothered him.

Elaine noticed him staring.

She closed her fist.

“Give me your phone.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“No.”

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

“I said—”

“No.”

The word echoed through the yard.

Elaine froze.

Daniel had not raised his voice.

That somehow made it more powerful.

He pointed toward the gate.

“You need to leave.”

“This is my neighborhood.”

“This is my property.”

“I have authority.”

“You've said that.”

Elaine stared at him.

Then she began walking toward the gate.

Daniel followed at a distance.

He did not touch her.

He did not block her physically.

He simply stayed behind her, recording.

The empty bucket remained near the pool.

The gate stood open.

The rotten food floated across the water.

Everything was captured.

Elaine reached the gate.

She grabbed the latch.

Then stopped.

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Her face went pale.

Daniel noticed.

She looked at him.

“What did you do?”

“I called the police.”

“You didn't have to.”

“Yes, I did.”

A patrol vehicle turned onto the street.

Then another.

Elaine swallowed.

Two officers entered through the gate.

One was a patrol officer.

The other was a lieutenant.

The lieutenant was a woman in her early 50s with short gray hair and an expression that immediately changed when she saw the scene.

Pool.

Rotten food.

Open gate.

Bucket.

Two people.

Keyring.

She walked toward them.

“Everyone stay where you are.”

Daniel lowered his phone slightly.

Elaine raised both hands.

“This is an HOA matter.”

The lieutenant looked at her.

“Did you enter this property?”

Elaine hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Were you invited?”
