“I also know when you arrived.”
Silence.
“I know what was in your hand.”
Her face tightened.
“I know that bottle was already full before you approached the gate.”
She looked up at the cameras.
The investigator followed her gaze.
“Those four cameras are being mirrored to my office.”
The homeowner stared.
Even he had not known it was happening live.
The HOA president looked from one camera to another.
Then at the investigator.
Her voice lost some of its certainty.
“Why?”
The investigator replied:
“Because this is not the first complaint involving you entering property with evidence already in your possession.”
For the first time since the homeowner saw her at the gate, the HOA president looked frightened.
Not angry.
Frightened.
“What complaints?”
The investigator did not answer.
She stepped closer.
“Who complained?”
“Not discussing that here.”
“You cannot surveil an HOA president without cause.”
“We have cause.”
“What cause?”
He looked toward the bottle.
“You’re holding part of it.”
She glanced down.
The cloudy liquid suddenly seemed heavier.
The homeowner asked:
“What’s going on?”
The investigator looked toward him.
“Remember when I told you we were investigating a pattern of questionable property-access incidents?”
“Yes.”
“It’s larger than we originally believed.”
The HOA president stepped toward the damaged gate.
The investigator moved sideways.
Not blocking her physically.
Simply placing himself in the route.
“I need the bottle.”
“No.”
Her answer came too quickly.
He held out an evidence bag.
“Do not alter or discard it.”
“This belongs to the association.”
“Then the association can request return after testing.”
“You have no warrant.”
“Correct.”
“Then I’m leaving.”
“You are free to leave.”
She relaxed slightly.
Then the investigator added:
“The bottle stays if you voluntarily surrender it.”
“No.”
“You can take it with you.”
Her confidence returned.
“Good.”
“But understand that every movement from the moment you arrived is preserved on four synchronized feeds.”
She froze.
“And if the contents of that bottle later change, disappear, or cannot be produced after a lawful preservation request, that may become relevant.”
Her fingers tightened around it.
The homeowner watched the calculation happen.
Keep the bottle, risk later testing and evidence preservation.
Surrender it, let the county test whatever she brought.
Dump it, cameras record destruction.
She had arrived believing she controlled the frame.
Now every exit led through somebody else’s evidence.
The investigator waited.
The HOA president looked toward the homeowner.
