Then looked toward the junior adviser.

He looked deeply uncomfortable.

She asked him:

“Would you mind bringing me a glass of water?”

The manager turned.

“No.”

The adviser froze.

The woman looked toward the manager.

“No?”

“You’re leaving.”

“I’m thirsty.”

The manager pointed toward the entrance.

“This conversation is over.”

Then a mechanical sound came from the rear wall.

A soft electronic tone.

A lock disengaging.

Everyone turned.

The private vault door opened.

The older vault director emerged first.

Gray-haired.

White American.

Late fifties.

A charcoal suit beneath a security vest.

Behind him walked a Black American attorney in his early fifties carrying a sealed portfolio case.

The vault director was saying something over his shoulder when he looked across the showroom.

He stopped.

His face changed.

Not slowly.

Instantly.

His eyes moved from the Black woman—

to the manager—

to the security guard—

to the velvet tray—

and finally to the manager’s outstretched arm pointing toward the door.

“What is happening?”

The manager spoke first.

“Nothing.”

The Black woman said nothing.

The vault director walked closer.

His expression became alarmed.

“Why is she standing out here?”

The manager frowned.

“You know her?”

The attorney looked toward the billionaire.

Then toward the manager.

The vault director’s voice dropped.

“Of course I know her.”

The manager’s posture changed.

“How?”

The director stared at her.

Then at the necklace still resting on the tray.

“Put that down.”

The manager blinked.

“What?”

“The tray.”

She lowered it.

The attorney stepped forward.

“Is there a problem?”

The vault director looked toward the billionaire.

“I thought you were arriving at five.”

“I changed my schedule.”

“You should have called.”

The Black woman’s expression remained calm.

“I wanted to see the floor first.”

The manager’s eyes moved between them.

The director glanced at the glass cases.

Then back.

“Have you been shown the collection?”

The billionaire looked toward the manager.

“No.”

The manager’s lips parted.

The director’s face became pale.

“Why not?”

The Black woman answered quietly.

“I was redirected to silver.”

Someone near the back of the showroom inhaled sharply.

The vault director stared at the manager.

“You did what?”

The manager recovered.

“She arrived without an appointment and refused to identify—”

The billionaire interrupted for the first time.

“I asked you to ask my name.”

The manager stopped.

The attorney looked toward her.

The vault director closed his eyes for one second.

Then opened them.

“Do you know whose collection this is?”

The manager looked toward the cases.

“Of course.”

“No.”

The director pointed toward the billionaire.

“Do you know whose?”

The manager’s face lost color.

The attorney placed the portfolio case on the glass counter.

Opened the clasps.
