The screen read: UNIT 44 β€” SECURITY GATEWAY FAILED AUTHENTICATION. ISOLATION PENDING. MAINTENANCE ACKNOWLEDGMENT REQUIRED.

He pressed the incident acknowledgment, not an override. A protocol previously established by the city's security team did the rest. The vehicle's compromised data terminal disconnected from its protected municipal network. Its display flashed and went black. The radio's dispatch audio, routed through the same malfunctioning gateway in this particular vehicle, abruptly stopped, although a separate backup emergency channel remained available to the police department.

Brady reached into the cruiser for his microphone. Silence. He tapped it. Silence again. Then he leaned close to the dashboard as though proximity could wake a dead screen.

He turned slowly.

The man on the shoulder held the diagnostic terminal in an open palm. Its screen showed a timestamp, an incident number, and the hardware identity of the cruiser.

β€œWhat did you do?” Brady demanded.

β€œI documented a failure your department was already investigating,” the man replied. β€œAnd now I want my watch.”

For the first time, Brady appeared uncertain who stood before him.

The man's name was not the point of the moment. His job was not a title that placed him above anyone else. He was a middle-aged citizen whose property had been taken and broken at a traffic stop. He had complied. He had asked reasonable questions. He had tried to protect his balance while someone in uniform had treated his disability as an advantage to exploit.

But the officer's face made it clear that a professional credential was the only language he had ever been taught to respect.

β€œThat terminal is restricted property,” Brady said. β€œHand it over.”

β€œIt's assigned to me. The department's maintenance supervisor can confirm that.”

Brady took a step forward, then stopped. His eyes flicked to the convenience store and its camera, to the bus still waiting at the intersection, to the broken watch in his own hand.

The man spoke quietly. β€œYour body camera is still recording, isn't it?”

Brady touched the center of his shirt. A small green light blinked.

β€œThen don't make this worse.”
