He looked toward the Black woman.

“Chairwoman.”

The pilot stopped breathing.

The woman slowly removed her glasses.

The cabin became silent.

The operations director continued.

“The transfer was recorded at 8:04 this morning.”

He looked toward the pilot.

“She owns the aircraft.”

The pilot’s hand dropped.

His face emptied.

“What?”

The Black woman rose.

Slowly.

She picked up her handbag herself.

The operations director looked at the pilot again.

“And the unauthorized charter you scheduled for tonight?”

The pilot’s eyes widened.

The operations director held up the folder.

“That’s exactly why she came in person.”

The pilot stepped backward.

For the first time since entering the cabin, he looked unsure of where to put his hands.

The Black CEO stood directly in front of him.

No longer seated.

No longer physically beneath him.

Her voice was almost quiet.

“You weren’t protecting my aircraft from an intruder.”

The pilot swallowed.

“You were trying to throw the owner off her own jet…”

She paused.

“…so you could illegally sell my flight time.”

His face went white.

“Chairwoman, that is not what happened.”

She looked at him for a long moment.

Then:

“Hand me your badge.”

He stared.

“What?”

“Your company badge.”

“You can’t be serious.”

She held out her hand.

“I am being extremely serious.”

The pilot looked toward the operations director.

“Tell her.”

The director’s face showed no sympathy.

“Give her the badge.”

The pilot’s breathing became louder.

“You don’t understand.”

The Black CEO answered:

“That sentence has had an unusually busy afternoon.”

He stared.

She continued:

“You told me I didn’t understand whose airplane this was.”

“You told me I didn’t understand boarding procedure.”

“You told me I didn’t understand who belonged in this seat.”

She held out her hand again.

“Now you’re telling me I don’t understand the off-book charter loaded into the aircraft schedule under a maintenance repositioning code.”

The pilot did not move.

The operations director opened the folder.

Inside were printed flight records.

Fuel receipts.

A passenger-services request.

Wire-transfer data.

A screenshot of a private messaging conversation.
