Perhaps another piece of family history that had disappeared before anyone could preserve it.
Now it was lying in her son's arms.
She looked toward the boy.
"Where did you find this?"
He pointed toward the enormous cream can.
"Inside."
Her eyes widened.
He continued.
"Behind a panel."
The auctioneer approached.
"Ma'am, we need to settle ownership of those contents."
She turned toward him.
Her face became guarded.
"My son purchased the item."
The older man nodded impatiently.
"The container, yes."
Then he pointed toward the case.
"But not necessarily historical business records concealed inside."
The mother studied him.
She was not an attorney.
She did not know whether ownership of something found inside auctioned property would be straightforward.
But she knew her son should not be pressured into handing important documents to a man who appeared desperate to obtain them.
She took a slow breath.
"Then we'll have someone qualified review the situation."
The auctioneer's expression tightened.
"There's no need to make this complicated."
She held her son's shoulder.
"You're the person saying there's a dispute."
He stared.
She continued.
"So we'll document the discovery and get legal advice."
Several people nodded.
The helpful farmer stepped closer.
"I witnessed the whole thing."
He looked toward the mother.
"The boy bought the can. We opened it with the auction staff standing here. The case was inside a hidden compartment."
She nodded gratefully.
Then looked toward the auction employee.
"Can you confirm that?"
The younger man hesitated.
The auctioneer turned toward him.
For one terrible moment, the employee looked trapped.
Then he straightened.
"Yes, ma'am."
The auctioneer's face darkened.
The employee continued.
"That's what happened."
The mother exhaled.
"Thank you."
The boy looked up at her.
For several seconds, he seemed uncertain whether she would tell him to give the case away.
Then she gently touched his cheek.
"You did nothing wrong by asking for help."
He began crying again.
She held him.
The crowd watched quietly.
The moment no longer felt like an auction.
It felt like the discovery of something that had waited a lifetime to be found.
The local sheriff's office was contacted to document the disagreement and prevent it from becoming a confrontation.
