Two years earlier, a flash flood had swept through a narrow valley where Henry was inspecting irrigation works. His horse panicked, and the older man became trapped against a fallen tree as the water rose.

Caleb reached him before the current became too strong.

With help from two other ranch hands, he secured a rope and brought Henry to safety.

The rescue left Caleb injured.

For weeks afterward, he struggled with pain in his shoulder.

Henry insisted upon compensating him.

Caleb refused money.

So Henry offered the western pasture.

It was a valuable piece of land, bordered by timber and containing a sheltered meadow suitable for a small homestead.

Caleb protested.

Henry wouldn't listen.

“You've spent years helping build this place.”

“I was paid.”

“Not for risking your life to save mine.”

Caleb looked toward the mountains.

For a moment, he seemed overwhelmed.

Then whispered, “I don't need that much.”

Henry smiled.

“Then perhaps you've never had enough land to know what it means.”

The deed was prepared and recorded.

Caleb became the legal owner of the western parcel, subject to whatever rights and boundaries were established in the instrument.

He intended to build a proper cabin there someday.

But he continued working for Henry.

He liked the ranch.

He liked the older man.

And he liked believing there was finally somewhere he belonged.

Then Victor Harrow began lending money to Willow Creek.

Caleb noticed the change.

Henry became troubled.

He spent more evenings studying records.

And whenever Victor visited, the atmosphere in the farmhouse grew tense.

Caleb knew enough to ask whether anything was wrong.

Henry always answered the same way.

“Just business.”

Then, shortly before his death, Henry took Caleb aside.

They stood beside the old barn at sunset.

The mountains were purple beneath the evening sky.

Henry looked tired.

Older than he should have.

He handed Caleb a small brass key.

“What is this?” Caleb asked.

Henry glanced toward the barn.

“There's a compartment beneath the old reading platform.”

Caleb frowned.

“The one Evelyn used when she was young?”

Henry nodded.

“I've left some papers there.”

“Why?”

The older man hesitated.

Then answered.

“Because I don't trust Victor Harrow.”

Caleb's expression changed.

Henry continued.

“If anything happens to me, make sure Evelyn sees those records.”

Caleb looked toward the key.
