The woman reflected in the glass was still beautiful.

Still confident.

Still unmistakably herself.

She smiled faintly.

“Why should I stop wearing something I love because somebody else behaved badly?”

The stylist nodded.

“Exactly.”

Then she laughed.

“And that skirt is too gorgeous to stay in a closet.”

The CEO laughed with her.

A few minutes later, her father arrived.

He stopped in the doorway.

For a moment, he stared.

Then he grinned.

“There she is.”

The CEO turned.

“Hi, Dad.”

He looked toward the cape.

“Same outfit?”

She nodded.

“Same outfit.”

He smiled.

Then walked closer.

“You look beautiful.”

She kissed his cheek.

“Thank you.”

For several seconds, he studied her face.

Then asked gently, “You okay?”

She understood what he meant.

He wasn't asking whether the dress fit.

He wasn't asking whether she felt prepared for the event.

He was asking whether returning to those memories had become too much.

She took a slow breath.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Her father smiled.

He reached for her hand.

“Good.”

She looked toward him.

For a moment, she remembered being eleven years old in his garage, organizing invoices with a pencil and a calculator.

She remembered him teaching her that a number in a computer wasn't automatically the truth.

She remembered how angry he'd been when someone dismissed his concerns about an incorrect towing record.

And she remembered how proud he'd been when her company began helping organizations make records more reliable.

She squeezed his hand.

“You were right.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“About what?”

She smiled.

“A lot of things.”

He laughed.

“That's what I keep telling your mother.”

The CEO burst out laughing.

Then he became serious.

“I'm proud of you.”

Her eyes filled.

“Because of the investigation?”

He shook his head.

“Because you didn't let the people who mistreated you decide who you were going to become afterward.”

She looked down.

Her father continued.

“You were angry.”

“Yes.”

“You had every reason to be.”

She nodded.

“But you kept doing the work.”

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Then she embraced him.

He held her tightly.

And for the first time in a long while, she felt that the story was no longer something happening to her.

It had become something she could remember without allowing it to control every part of her future.

The awards event took place inside an elegant historic building.

Hundreds of guests gathered beneath enormous chandeliers.

Business leaders discussed technology.

Engineers exchanged ideas.
