Rebecca’s keycard opened the first door.
Graham’s code opened the second.
Inside cabinet C-14 were old trust documents.
Nothing unusual.
C-15.
Tax records.
C-16.
Empty.
Lena’s photograph suggested C-19.
Rebecca swiped.
Access denied.
Again.
Denied.
Graham said:
“Restricted.”
Daniel looked at the order.
“Open it.”
Graham’s face tightened.
“I don’t have access.”
Imani looked toward him.
“Your name is on the access list.”
“Outdated.”
Rebecca said:
“No.”
Everybody turned.
She looked at Graham.
“You opened it last month.”
His lawyer spoke:
“Rebecca.”
She ignored him.
“I saw you.”
Graham stared.
“You’re confused.”
“No.”
“February twelfth.”
“You told me the hinge alarm was malfunctioning.”
Graham’s face went still.
Daniel looked toward security.
“Override.”
The locksmith worked for nine minutes.
When the cabinet opened, it contained no paper ledger.
Only three empty archive boxes.
Imani felt disappointment.
Then noticed dust.
Two boxes dusty.
One clean.
Recently moved.
She crouched.
A rectangular outline marked the shelf.
Something had sat there.
Large.
Heavy.
Removed recently.
Rebecca whispered:
“The ledger.”
Imani looked toward her.
“You’ve seen it?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Last quarter.”
“Contents?”
“Account adjustment logs.”
“Why paper?”
“Graham said legal continuity.”
Graham laughed.
“She’ll say anything now.”
Imani stood.
Then noticed the underside of the shelf.
A torn piece of yellow paper clung to a metal edge.
She carefully removed it with gloves.
Three handwritten characters:
NBR.
And beneath:
03/14.
Ruth Caldwell’s false amendment date.
Imani felt the air leave her chest.
Not proof.
Connection.
Enough to keep going.
Security-camera logs showed cabinet C-19 opened at 6:12 the previous evening.
After the court order.
By a credential assigned to Graham Vale.
His lawyer immediately objected.
Graham said:
“My badge was cloned.”
Imani looked at him.
“Convenient.”
“It happens.”
“Not often inside executive vaults.”
He said nothing.
Camera footage from the vault corridor showed a maintenance worker pushing a cart.
Face obscured.
Badge:
Graham’s.
The worker entered at 6:09.
Left 6:17.
The cart carried a black archive box.
Whoever had removed the ledger did it after records were frozen.
That changed the case.
Potential evidence destruction.
