The blonde woman thought nobody was watching when she forced open the wooden gate and slipped into the backyard carrying a silver metal canister.
She was wrong.
At exactly 4:17 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in suburban North Carolina, fifty-two-year-old Cynthia Vale crept along the narrow concrete path beside an expensive two-story home, glancing over her shoulder to make certain the neighbors hadn't noticed her arrival. Her shoulder-length blonde hair was perfectly styled, and she wore a fitted bright-blue one-piece swimsuit decorated with elegant white floral patterns.
The outfit made her look like an ordinary guest arriving for an afternoon swim.
The canister in her hands told a different story.

It was large, silver, and heavy enough that she had to support it with both hands. A yellow triangular warning label was attached to the side, and a smaller manufacturer's label had been partially covered with gray tape.
Cynthia stopped beside the swimming pool.
Crystal-clear turquoise water shimmered beneath the afternoon sunlight. The rectangular pool was surrounded by clean concrete decking, blue mosaic tiles, manicured grass, and mature trees that gave the backyard a peaceful, secluded atmosphere.
For a moment, Cynthia simply looked at the water.
Then she unscrewed the canister's cap.
She crouched beside the edge and tilted the container forward.
A thick stream of cloudy liquid spilled into the pool, spreading beneath the surface in pale, swirling ribbons.
Cynthia smiled.
"There," she whispered. "Now let's see how stubborn you want to be."
She didn't hear the sliding glass door open behind her.
She didn't notice the camera mounted above the patio.
And she certainly didn't realize that the homeowner's smartphone had just connected to a video conference involving four members of her own homeowners association board.
Thirty-five-year-old Andre Walker stepped onto the patio wearing nothing but a large bright-yellow bath towel wrapped securely around his waist.
He was an exceptionally handsome Black American man with deep-brown skin, a tall muscular frame, broad shoulders, sharply defined features, short neatly faded black hair, and a carefully maintained beard.
He had just finished showering after a morning workout.
Now he stood frozen, staring at the woman deliberately pouring an unidentified substance into his swimming pool.
For several seconds, his mind struggled to accept what he was seeing.
Then his voice exploded across the backyard.
"What the hell are you doing?"
Cynthia spun around.
The canister remained tilted above the water.
Andre saw the cloudy liquid spreading farther across the surface.
"Stop pouring that!"
Instead of apologizing, she straightened with an expression of almost theatrical confidence.
"Well, look who finally decided to come outside."
