The nineteen-year-old boy laughed as he dragged a thick black permanent marker across the bright-yellow door of a Lamborghini Diablo that didn't belong to him.

The marker squeaked against the glossy paint. His hand moved slowly, deliberately forming two enormous words across the expensive bodywork.

FUCK YOU.

Then he stepped backward, admired his work, and smiled directly at the camera his girlfriend was holding.

"That's what happens when somebody thinks he's better than everyone else."

Brett Voss wore a bright-blue hoodie, black ripped jeans, and spotless white high-top sneakers. His messy blonde hair hung across his forehead, and his expression carried the unmistakable confidence of a young man who had rarely been forced to answer for his actions.

The yellow Lamborghini sat on a spotless concrete driveway outside an elegant two-story house in an upscale North Carolina neighborhood called Stonebridge Heights. Its low body, deep side air intakes, enormous black rear spoiler, and polished wheels made it look extraordinary beneath the bright afternoon sun.

Brett had been told repeatedly that the car was private property.

He didn't care.

Standing several feet behind him was his mother, Marianne Voss, the forty-eight-year-old president of the Stonebridge Heights Homeowners Association. She was an attractive, slim blonde woman with shoulder-length perfectly styled hair, wearing an expensive navy-blue blazer, white blouse, tailored beige trousers, gold earrings, and designer heels.

She was watching her son vandalize a vehicle worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

And she was smiling.

"Make sure he can see it when he comes outside," Marianne said.

Brett laughed again.

Then he added a long black line beneath the insult, pressing the marker hard against the paint.

That was when the front door opened.

Thirty-eight-year-old Caleb Turner stepped onto his porch.

He was a tall, muscular Black American man with deep-brown skin, broad shoulders, short neatly faded black hair, a carefully trimmed beard, and a calm, naturally authoritative presence. He wore a fitted dark-teal polo shirt, dark-blue jeans, a black wristwatch, and casual leather shoes.

He stopped when he saw Brett beside the Lamborghini.

For one moment, his mind refused to understand what he was looking at.

Then he saw the writing.

The marker.

And Marianne standing behind her son.

Caleb slowly descended the porch steps.

"What are you doing to my car?"

Brett turned.

The young man didn't apologize.

Instead, he held up the marker with an arrogant grin.

"Improving it."

Caleb stopped three feet away.
