Black ink spread over the yellow paint.

Then Brett wrote the second word.

He stepped back, laughed, and admired his work.

Marianne stood nearby.

She didn't intervene.

She smiled.

And when Caleb's front door opened, all three suddenly understood that the confrontation they'd imagined controlling was about to become something very different.

Caleb's first instinct was fury.

The car had survived years of damaged components, expensive repairs, and meticulous restoration.

He'd spent countless weekends beside his father, learning how to bring it back to life.

Now a nineteen-year-old was grinning beside it after writing an obscenity across the paint.

Caleb wanted to grab the marker.

He wanted to shout.

And for one terrible moment, he imagined how easily he could physically overpower Brett.

But he didn't move toward him.

His father had taught him to respect the difference between anger and action.

Raymond used to say that losing control didn't prove someone was strong.

It proved they had allowed another person to make a decision for them.

So Caleb stopped several feet away.

He demanded that Brett put down the marker.

Then Marianne intervened.

She shoved his arm.

Accused him of threatening her son.

And began calling the police.

Caleb looked toward his security camera.

He knew the confrontation had been recorded.

Then he remembered the motion alert from earlier that morning.

He opened the recording.

And what he saw made his anger suddenly turn into something colder.

The video began with Marianne standing beside the Lamborghini.

The two men from the transport company were examining the vehicle.

The man in the gray work shirt asked whether the owner had signed a transportation authorization.

Marianne held out a document.

She said the association had approved removal.

The man with the folder looked uncertain.

He pointed toward the driveway and asked whether the homeowner knew they were there.

Marianne shook her head.

Then she said something that made Caleb stop the recording.

"He won't cooperate voluntarily. Once the car's in your lot, he'll have to deal with us."

Caleb replayed the sentence.

Then continued watching.

The second man asked whether the proposed removal involved a safety violation.

Marianne pointed toward the Lamborghini.

She explained that the association was preparing additional appearance-enforcement documentation and that the vehicle would soon qualify for emergency action.

The man in gray frowned.

He asked what condition justified that.

Marianne hesitated.

Then said, "We'll have the pictures before you need to move it."
