But as he walked away, he was already editing the conversation in his mind.

By the time he reached home, he'd convinced himself that Caleb was being unreasonable.

Marianne heard about the refusal that evening.

She was standing in the kitchen preparing dinner when Brett entered with his phone.

"Mom, you've got to see this car."

He showed her the photographs.

The yellow Lamborghini looked extraordinary against the clean concrete driveway.

Marianne recognized the house immediately.

"That's Caleb Turner's place."

Brett nodded.

"He's got this amazing Diablo, and he won't even let me drive it."

She frowned.

"Did you ask nicely?"

"Of course."

"Maybe he's worried about insurance."

Brett rolled his eyes.

"Everybody's worried about insurance."

Marianne examined another photograph.

She'd seen Caleb before at HOA meetings.

He was polite, financially successful, and rarely interested in neighborhood gossip.

For reasons she hadn't entirely examined, his independence irritated her.

He didn't flatter her.

Didn't ask for special favors.

And didn't appear impressed when she introduced herself as association president.

"Perhaps I can speak with him," she said.

Brett brightened immediately.

"Seriously?"

Marianne smiled.

"I know how to handle difficult homeowners."

Her son grinned.

Neither understood that this was the moment an ordinary refusal began turning into a neighborhood conflict.

Marianne visited Caleb the following weekend.

He was washing the Lamborghini when she arrived carrying a clipboard.

She wore a navy blazer, white blouse, and tailored beige trousers, an outfit remarkably similar to the one she'd eventually wear during the vandalism incident.

"Mr. Turner," she called brightly.

Caleb looked up.

"Good morning, Marianne."

She smiled.

"I hear you have a rather spectacular vehicle."

He glanced toward the Lamborghini.

"It's special to me."

"I'm sure it is. Brett tells me you discussed a possible community appearance."

Caleb frowned.

"I said I might consider a properly organized display."

Marianne nodded as though she'd heard something different.

"Wonderful. We're planning a neighborhood luxury-car showcase next month."

Caleb set down his cleaning cloth.

"At the clubhouse?"

"Possibly. We haven't settled all the details."

He considered the idea.

"I'm not opposed to a display. But I'd need to know how it would be organized."

Marianne smiled.

"Brett can handle the arrangements."

Caleb shook his head.

"I'd prefer to coordinate directly with the association and remain with the car."

Her expression changed.

"Why?"

"Because it's a valuable collector vehicle."

She gave a small laugh.

"He's not a child."

"No, he isn't. But I'm still responsible for my property."
