The moment the little girl saw him, she covered her mouth.
“Daddy.”
Her mother wrapped an arm around her.
The video continued.
The father joked about doing dishes.
He held up her drawing.
He talked about the chair.
Then he looked into the camera and explained how much he loved her curiosity.
The girl's tears fell silently.
She didn't ask anyone to stop the video.
She watched every second.
When the recording ended, she stared at the dark screen.
For several minutes, neither mother nor daughter spoke.
Then the girl whispered, “Can we watch it again someday?”
Her mother kissed her forehead.
“Whenever you want.”
The child looked toward the notebook.
Then toward the little star on the drawing.
She wiped her cheeks.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“I miss Daddy.”
The mother's eyes filled.
“I know, sweetheart.”
The girl continued.
“But I'm happy too.”
The mother smiled through tears.
“You can be both.”
The child thought about that.
Then nodded.
“I think Daddy would like that.”
Her mother gently touched her cheek.
“I do too.”
They embraced.
For a long time, they remained together.
Then the girl pulled back.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Can we go see my new chair now?”
The mother laughed through tears.
“Of course.”
The girl grinned.
“And can the bikers stay for cake?”
Her mother laughed harder.
“I think they'd like that.”
The child became serious.
“Because Daddy said you have to feed people who help you.”
The mother smiled.
“He certainly did.”
Then they returned to the community hall.
The president rose immediately when he saw them.
The little girl looked around the room.
Her eyes were still red.
But she was smiling.
She held up the notebook.
Then announced something that made several adults laugh.
“Okay. I have new engineering instructions.”
The president placed one hand over his heart.
“Oh, no.”
She grinned.
“First, I want the snack box full.”
The room erupted in laughter.
“Second, I want to go to the big tree.”
The president smiled.
“That's a good plan.”
She looked toward the mother.
Then added one more condition.
“And nobody pushes me unless I ask or we need help.”
The mother nodded.
“We'll follow the safe plan you worked out with your team.”
The child smiled.
“Good.”
The president looked toward her.
Then gave an exaggerated salute.
“Yes, boss.”
She giggled.
And somewhere among forty tattooed motorcycle riders, someone began crying again.
