“He mistook me for a trespasser.”

Mom was silent.

Then she asked, “Did you tell him you live there?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“He didn't believe me.”

I swallowed.

Then whispered, “He sprayed me with the garden hose.”

For a moment, the phone went completely quiet.

Then I heard my mother take a sharp breath.

“Camille.”

“I'm okay.”

“Did he hurt you?”

“I don't think so. I'm getting checked.”

She was silent again.

Then she asked, “Where are you?”

“At home.”

“Your father and I are coming.”

“Mom—”

“We're coming.”

I looked toward the front window.

The patrol vehicles were still outside.

For a moment, I wanted to argue.

I wanted to tell her I was the chief of police and could handle the situation.

Then I remembered that I was also her daughter.

And she'd spent years worrying about the risks I faced because of my profession.

I took a breath.

“Okay.”

Her voice softened.

“We love you.”

My eyes filled.

“I love you too.”

When the call ended, I stood beside the counter for several minutes.

Then I went upstairs.

Changed clothes.

And looked at myself in the bathroom mirror.

My hair was damp.

My eyes were red.

And a thin line of dirt remained near my collarbone.

I stared at the woman looking back.

The same woman who had raised her right hand that morning and promised to uphold the law.

The same woman who had worked through difficult cases, supervised dangerous operations, and spent years proving she could lead under pressure.

None of those accomplishments had protected me from what happened in my front yard.

And that was precisely why the incident mattered.

It wasn't proof that I needed more authority.

It was proof that authority needed limits.

Assistant Chief Helena Ortiz arrived twenty minutes later.

She didn't come alone.

With her was Captain James Whitaker, the department's professional standards commander, who had been instructed to coordinate evidence preservation while an outside agency assumed responsibility for the independent investigation.

Helena found me in the living room.

I was sitting on the sofa wearing dark trousers and a soft blue blouse.

My hair had been towel-dried.
