The first thing the blonde police officer noticed was the dress.

Not the black reinforced evidence case resting on the steel inspection table. Not the official appointment confirmation the woman held between two manicured fingers. Not the controlled, deliberate way she carried herself through the glass doors of the Asheford Police Department.

The dress.

It was an extraordinary champagne-colored creation, fitted closely around the young woman's figure, with a structured corset bodice, narrow shoulder straps, architectural pleating around the hips, and a long sculpted skirt that ended just below her knees in a graceful curved hem. The fabric caught the afternoon sunlight with a soft metallic shimmer, making her look as though she had stepped directly out of a private fashion event rather than into a municipal police headquarters.

Her dark chocolate skin glowed beneath the bright lobby lights. Her black hair was gathered into a polished braided bun, and a pair of small gold earrings framed her elegant face. She carried a structured taupe handbag and wore delicate gold bracelets, a thin necklace, and high-heeled sandals that clicked softly against the polished floor.

She was thirty-two years old, strikingly beautiful, and completely unhurried.

To the officer behind the inspection table, that last detail was particularly irritating.

Most people entering the station looked nervous. Some glanced repeatedly toward the uniformed personnel. Others lowered their voices, rehearsed explanations, or clutched paperwork as though afraid someone might snatch it away.

This woman did none of those things.
