Cole had asked his son privately.

Once.

“Did you take it?”

Aaron said:

“If I tell you no, will you believe me?”

Cole had answered:

“I need proof.”

Aaron laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Then said:

“Then you’ve already answered.”

The club suspended him.

Cole did not vote.

He abstained.

He told himself that was loyalty.

Aaron called it cowardice.

Two nights later, he left Tennessee.

Cole never saw him again.

Now Dean stood outside a diner in the rain and confessed.

Cole unlocked the door before anyone could stop him.

He grabbed Dean by the front of his jacket and shoved him against the exterior brick wall.

The waitress gasped.

Dean did not fight back.

Cole’s face was inches from his brother’s.

“You let me believe my son stole from children.”

Dean closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You planted the ledger.”

“Yes.”

Cole shoved him harder.

“Why?”

Dean’s voice cracked.

“Gambling.”

Cole froze.

Dean opened his eyes.

“I owed people money.”

“Bad people.”

“I took from the fund planning to replace it.”

“I used Aaron’s access because I knew nobody would look at me.”

Cole’s hands shook.

“You destroyed him.”

“I know.”

“You destroyed us.”

“I know.”

Cole raised one fist.

Then stopped.

Maya stood inside the doorway.

Watching.

Her face was terrified.

Cole lowered his hand.

That saved Dean from the punch.

Maybe saved Cole from becoming someone he did not want his granddaughter to meet on their first night.

Cole released him.

“Why didn’t Aaron tell me?”

Dean looked toward the ground.

“Because he thought you’d kill me.”

Cole stared.

Dean gave a broken laugh.

“He knew you.”

“So he took the blame?”

“Not at first.”

Dean wiped rain from his face.

“He confronted me.”

“He said I had twenty-four hours to return the money.”

“I begged.”

“I told him the men I owed would hurt my family.”

“My boys were little.”

“I told him if the club found out, you’d come after me.”

Dean swallowed.

“Aaron said he’d give me time.”

“But somebody found the missing ledger before I could fix it.”

“I panicked.”

“I put the copy in his locker.”

Cole looked physically ill.

Dean continued.

“When they accused him, I thought he’d expose me.”

“He didn’t.”

“Why?”

Dean looked toward Maya.

“Because he loved you.”

Cole’s face changed.

Dean said quietly:

“He told me, ‘My father already buried Mom. If he finds out his brother stole from the people he swore to protect, he’ll destroy himself trying to punish you.’”

Cole looked away.

“He protected you from me.”

Dean nodded.

“And I rewarded him by letting him leave.”

The rain intensified.

Maya stepped outside.

Cole immediately turned.

“No.”
