Adrienne waited.

Like what?

No answer arrived.

Marcus quietly said:

“Ms. Carter…”

Adrienne raised one hand.

Then looked at Captain Bowman.

“Who has authority over passenger verification?”

He swallowed.

“Pilot in command has final responsibility.”

“Did you verify?”

“No.”

“To the first officer.”

“Did you verify?”

Ethan stood halfway down the stairs now.

“No, ma’am.”

“Why?”

He looked toward Claire.

Then the captain.

“Because they said she wasn’t cleared.”

Adrienne stared.

“You outsourced your regulatory responsibility to somebody else’s confidence.”

His face reddened.

She looked at Claire.

“Who taught you to push passenger luggage with your foot?”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Nobody.”

“Good.”

“So that choice was yours.”

Claire whispered:

“Yes.”

Adrienne looked toward the second flight attendant standing inside the cabin.

Until now, Dana Lewis had remained almost invisible.

Forty-two.

White.

Fifteen years in private aviation.

She had been watching from behind the galley wall.

Adrienne called:

“Come down.”

Dana descended.

Her face was already wet.

Adrienne said:

“You were inside.”

Dana nodded.

“You heard the entire exchange.”

“Yes.”

“You knew the name Carter was on the passenger record.”

Dana hesitated.

That hesitation answered everything.

Claire turned sharply.

“You did?”

Dana closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Captain Bowman stared.

“What?”

Dana began crying harder.

“I saw it.”

“When?”

“Before she got here.”

Claire looked betrayed.

“Then why didn’t you say anything?”

Dana looked toward her.

“Because you said operations told us the owner wasn’t traveling.”

Marcus’s face changed.

Adrienne noticed.

“Who said that?”

Dana wiped her face.

“Regional dispatch.”

Marcus looked at Adrienne.

She understood immediately.

The scene had become larger again.

Adrienne asked:

“Name.”

Dana swallowed.

“Regional director Richard Vale.”

Marcus whispered:

“Jesus.”

Captain Bowman looked furious.

“Richard told us this flight was a client reposition.”

Adrienne looked toward him.

“My itinerary was in the system.”

“He said ignore it.”

That was the first moment Adrienne’s calm almost cracked.

“Say that again.”

The captain looked around.

Nobody wanted to be the person speaking now.

“He called at seven.”

“Said the owner entry was a placeholder.”

“Said actual passengers were arriving at nine.”

Adrienne looked toward Marcus.

He was already opening his phone.

“Actual passengers?”

The captain nodded.

“Three.”

“Names?”

“I don’t have them.”

“Claire?”

She looked terrified.

“Richard sent them by text.”

Adrienne said:

“Show me.”

Claire pulled out her phone.

Unlocked it with shaking fingers.

Opened a message.
