“For what?”

Evan pulled the Taser.

The bright orange device cleared the holster.

Several bystanders gasped.

The woman filming said:

“Oh my God.”

Marcus went completely still.

Isaiah felt his pulse accelerate.

Training does not eliminate fear.

It organizes it.

He immediately evaluated distance.

Evan approximately seven feet away.

Taser extended.

Marcus closer to line of fire than Isaiah.

No cover.

No threat justifying deployment.

Bystanders behind.

Danger of secondary injury if either man fell from the bench.

Isaiah kept his hands open.

“Officer Cole.”

“Hands up.”

“They are up.”

“Stand.”

Isaiah chose his words carefully.

“If we stand while you are aiming a Taser, there is more movement, not less.”

“Stop talking.”

“I’m trying to prevent you from making a serious mistake.”

That line was too direct.

He knew it immediately.

Evan heard humiliation.

“You threatening me?”

“No.”

“You said I’m making a mistake.”

“I said I’m trying to prevent one.”

“Stand up.”

Marcus looked toward Isaiah.

For the first time, fear appeared clearly on his face.

Not panic.

The recognition that a person holding a weapon had become emotionally committed to winning.

Isaiah said quietly:

“Marcus, don't move.”

Evan shouted:

“Do not tell him what to do!”

Isaiah stared at him.

That was the moment he knew the training evaluation had already begun, whether Evan knew it or not.

Not tomorrow.

Now.

The body camera blinked.

Isaiah lowered his voice.

“Officer Cole.”

“What?”

“Make sure your camera catches this part.”

Evan’s expression changed.

“What part?”

Isaiah slowly moved his right hand approximately two inches toward his jacket.

Evan tightened his grip.

“Stop!”

Isaiah stopped immediately.

“I'm going to retrieve department identification from my inside left pocket.”

Evan stared.

“What?”

“I am announcing the movement before making it.”

“No.”

“Fine.”

Isaiah returned his hand visibly to his knee.

Then looked toward Evan.

“You can retrieve it yourself after lowering the Taser.”

Evan’s eyes narrowed.

“Department identification?”

Isaiah said nothing.

Marcus looked at his brother.

Despite the situation, the smallest trace of disbelief crossed his face.

Isaiah had not told him who his new trainee was.

Of course.

Marcus understood before Evan did.

“Oh.”

Evan looked between them.

“What?”

Isaiah slowly turned his torso enough to expose the edge of a leather credential wallet clipped inside his jacket.

Not reaching.

Just visible.

A gold shield caught the gray afternoon light.

Evan froze.

His Taser remained raised.

Isaiah said:

“My name is Sergeant Isaiah Bennett.”

No one spoke.

“I supervise Field Training Unit Three.”

Evan’s face emptied.

Isaiah continued:

“You report to me at six tomorrow morning.”

The Taser began lowering.

Not because Isaiah ordered it.

Because Evan’s muscles seemed to forget how to hold it.

Marcus leaned back against the bench.

“That's unfortunate.”

“Marcus.”

“What?”

“I said two words.”

The bystanders remained silent.

Phones still recording.

Evan stared at the badge.

Then at Isaiah’s face.

“No.”

The word came out almost involuntarily.

Isaiah did not react.

Evan looked again.
