Recognition was beginning.
Academy emails.
Training rosters.
Perhaps a photograph.
“Sergeant Bennett?”
“Yes.”
Evan lowered the Taser fully.
For a moment, relief swept through the crowd.
Isaiah did not feel relief.
He felt disappointment.
Because the Taser had lowered after Evan discovered who Isaiah was.
Not because the facts changed.
Marcus was still exactly who he had been ten seconds earlier.
The bench had not moved.
The caller’s allegation had not strengthened or weakened.
No threat had appeared.
Only status.
Evan holstered the device.
His face was pale now.
“I didn't…”
He stopped.
Isaiah waited.
“I didn't know.”
Isaiah’s expression changed.
“That sentence is not helping you.”
Evan swallowed.
A second patrol car arrived at the edge of the path.
Officer Lena Ortiz stepped out.
Seven years on the department.
Isaiah knew her well.
She approached quickly, looked toward Evan, then Marcus, then Isaiah.
Recognition immediate.
“Sergeant?”
Isaiah nodded.
“Officer Ortiz.”
She looked toward Evan.
“What happened?”
Evan started:
“We got a suspicious-person call and they—”
Isaiah raised one hand.
“Before anybody discusses substance, activate your camera if it isn't already.”
Ortiz touched it.
“Active.”
“Good.”
Then he looked toward Evan.
“Do not discuss your report with her yet.”
Evan stared.
Isaiah continued:
“You will write independently.”
Ortiz understood instantly.
This had become administrative.
“Understood.”
Evan looked almost sick.
Marcus muttered:
“Now he understands calm.”
Isaiah turned.
“Please.”
Marcus raised both hands.
“I’m done.”
Isaiah looked toward Ortiz.
“Check the original call.”
“Caller allegation.”
“Dispatch notes.”
“And if possible, camera coverage.”
Ortiz nodded.
“Were you detained?”
“Yes.”
“Taser displayed?”
Evan looked at the ground.
Isaiah answered:
“Yes.”
Ortiz’s eyes moved toward Evan.
She did not react beyond that.
Professional.
Good.
Isaiah said:
“Also identify everyone filming.”
“Ask them to preserve recordings.”
“Do not seize phones.”
“Do not demand deletion.”
“Yes, Sergeant.”
One of the bystanders said:
“I can send mine.”
Isaiah looked over.
“Thank you.”
Then he addressed everyone.
“You’re free to remain in the public park.”
“No one is required to provide footage voluntarily.”
“If you choose to share it, Officer Ortiz can give you a department contact.”
Evan stood motionless.
Isaiah looked back.
“Officer Cole.”
“Yes, Sergeant.”
“Am I still detained?”
The question hit hard.
Evan hesitated.
“No.”
“When did the detention end?”
He stared.
Isaiah waited.
The body camera waited.
The phones waited.
Evan finally answered:
“When I confirmed your identity.”
Isaiah’s jaw tightened.
Wrong answer.
Very wrong.
