The first thing that struck the silver Lexus was the woman's shoulder. The second was her expensive police identification case, which skidded across the polished hood after a furious officer slapped it out of her hand.

"Fake badge! Hands behind your back!"

The command echoed through the open garage of a beautiful two-story suburban home at 142 Oakridge Lane, just outside downtown Eastbridge, North Carolina. Bright afternoon sunlight flooded the concrete driveway, reflecting against the silver Lexus and the cream-colored walls. Neighbors were beginning to gather across the street, drawn by the wailing house alarm and the arrival of two police officers.

Forty-two-year-old Naomi Carter could barely believe what was happening.

She was an extraordinarily beautiful Black American woman with deep-brown skin, dark eyes, delicate but striking features, and black hair pulled into a sophisticated high bun. She had a tall, slender, statuesque figure, and the breathtaking couture gown she wore made the encounter look even more absurd.

The bodice was a fitted black corset with a delicate scalloped lace sweetheart neckline. Long sheer black opera gloves covered her arms, while an elaborate metallic olive-gold satin skirt wrapped around her waist in sculptural folds. An enormous origami-style bow rose from the fabric at her hip, and the luxurious floor-length draping spread across the garage floor whenever she moved.

Oversized round olive-green earrings completed the outfit.

She looked like a woman who had just stepped away from an exclusive charity gala.

Because that was exactly where she had been less than twenty minutes earlier.

Now an angry white police sergeant was forcing her against the hood of her own car.

"Officer, listen to me carefully," Naomi said, struggling to keep her voice steady. "I live here."

The sergeant tightened his grip around her wrist.

"Stop lying!"

He was thirty-nine-year-old Elias Grant, a muscular white American officer with closely cropped light-brown hair, a square jaw, and the aggressive certainty of a man who believed hesitation was a sign of weakness. His fitted black uniform carried a silver badge, a department shoulder patch, a body camera, and the insignia of a patrol sergeant.

He pressed Naomi's upper body farther against the Lexus.

Her elaborate satin skirt caught against the front bumper, creating deep golden folds across the concrete.

"You're trespassing," he snapped. "And now you're resisting."

Naomi turned her head toward him.

"Check my identification."

Grant laughed contemptuously.

"I saw your little badge."

"Then look at it."

He shoved her shoulder again.

"Shut up!"

Outside the garage, a sixty-six-year-old neighbor named Walter Harris stood on the opposite sidewalk recording with his smartphone.

"Officer!" Walter shouted. "That's her house!"

Grant glanced toward him.

"Back up!"
