Now she was hearing about families facing challenges much greater than hers.
When the foundation invited her to speak, Naomi approached the podium carefully, gathering the enormous satin skirt as she walked.
The audience applauded.
She smiled.
Then looked toward the hospital staff seated near the front.
"Last year, I came to this event believing I understood what strength looked like."
The room became quiet.
She continued.
"I thought of strength as the ability to remain calm, make difficult decisions, and continue doing your job when circumstances became complicated."
She paused.
"Those things still matter."
Then she looked toward Imani.
"But this year, I've also learned that strength can mean accepting help, acknowledging pain, and allowing yourself to enjoy the good things in your life after something frightening happens."
Her voice remained steady.
She didn't describe the incident in detail.
Everyone in the room already knew enough.
Instead, she spoke about the families the foundation supported and the importance of helping people recover dignity, independence, and hope.
When she finished, the room applauded warmly.
Naomi returned to her table.
Imani stood and hugged her.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then her daughter whispered.
"I'm proud of you."
Naomi smiled through tears.
"I'm proud of us."
Later that evening, Deputy Chief Adrian Brooks approached their table.
He wore a dark suit and looked relieved to see Naomi enjoying herself.
"Chief Carter."
Naomi laughed.
"Adrian, we're off duty."
He smiled.
"Fair enough."
Imani greeted him warmly.
Brooks asked about school, then complimented her on the charity work she'd been doing with several classmates.
After she left to speak with friends, he sat beside Naomi.
For a few moments, they watched the ballroom.
Then Brooks said quietly.
"The latest patrol-training evaluations came in."
Naomi turned.
"And?"
He smiled faintly.
"We're seeing better decisions in the verification scenarios. Officers are asking more questions before escalating."
Naomi nodded.
"That's encouraging."
Brooks looked toward her.
"There's still work to do."
"There always will be."
He studied her for a moment.
Then glanced at the gown.
"I'm glad you wore it again."
Naomi laughed softly.
"Imani insisted."
"Smart girl."
"Very."
They sat quietly.
Then Brooks said something that surprised her.
"I've thought a lot about the day I arrived at your house."
Naomi looked toward him.
He continued.
"For weeks, people treated me like I saved the day because I recognized you."
She remained silent.
Brooks shook his head.
"But what bothered me was that I shouldn't have needed to come."
Naomi felt her expression soften.
"You're right."
He looked toward the ballroom.
"The system should've worked before that."
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Naomi answered.
"That's what we're trying to build."
