Then she reached forward and hugged me.

I wrapped one arm around her.

Behind her, Daniel began crying.

I looked up.

He had both hands pressed against his face.

His shoulders shook.

For several seconds, none of us spoke.

Then he lowered his hands.

He looked directly at me.

His voice was rough.

“Mr. Dawson?”

“Yes, sir?”

He swallowed.

“I don't know how to thank you.”

I shook my head.

“You don't owe me anything.”

Daniel looked toward Nora.

Then back at me.

His eyes filled.

“You gave her daddy back.”

The words struck me so hard that I couldn't answer.

I looked toward the little girl.

She was still holding my vest.

Then I looked back at Daniel.

“Your daughter knew you needed help.”

He nodded.

I continued.

“She found somebody who could respond.”

His lips trembled.

“And a young woman understood her signs. The store manager got the AED. Emergency services and the hospital team did the hard work.”

I took a breath.

“I was one part of it.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You were the part she found.”

For several seconds, I stared at him.

Then I looked toward Nora.

She had opened the notebook I brought.

She was drawing something on the first page.

I watched her little hand move across the paper.

A circle.

Two large wheels.

A person.

Another person.

Then a small shape with a long beard.

I leaned closer.

“What's that?”

She smiled.

Then pointed toward me.

I laughed.

“That's supposed to be me?”

She nodded enthusiastically.

Then added something beside my head.

It looked like a giant cloud.

I frowned.

“What's that?”

She touched my beard.

Daniel began laughing again.

“That's your beard.”

I shook my head.

“Kid, you've made it bigger than the rest of me.”

Nora laughed silently.

Daniel watched her.

For a moment, his face softened into an expression I would never forget.

Relief.

Love.

And the terrible awareness of how close he'd come to losing the chance to see her grow up.

Then he looked toward me.

“Ray, can I ask you something?”

I nodded.

“Of course.”

He looked down at his hands.

“Was she scared?”

The room became quiet.

I considered lying.

I wanted to spare him.

But I knew he deserved the truth, spoken gently.

“Yes.”

His eyes filled.

I continued.

“She was very scared.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Tears ran down his cheeks.

I waited.

Then he whispered, “She'd been trying to tell me.”

I nodded.

Margaret had prepared me for this.

Daniel looked toward Nora.

“She kept signing SICK at home.”

He shook his head.
