At 9:14 p.m., Dana phoned.

“Mr. Hayes.”

“Yes.”

“Voss knew Megan.”

Taylor stood.

Sophie, now safely back home with Mrs. Alvarez in another room, looked toward him.

Dana continued.

“He met her.”

“When?”

“The night she disappeared.”

Taylor’s knees weakened.

“What happened?”

“Voss’s widow found journals.”

“Megan arrived asking for protection.”

“Voss realized the contact chain was compromised.”

“What did he do?”

“He took her somewhere else.”

Taylor could barely speak.

“Where?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Dana paused.

“But Taylor…”

“Yes?”

“His journal says she was alive three months after the disappearance.”

Taylor stopped breathing.

Three months.

Megan had been alive.

After the note.

After the search.

After Sophie’s second birthday.

Alive.

He sat down.

Sophie walked closer.

“Dad?”

Taylor covered the phone.

“I’m okay.”

She looked at him.

“You’re crying.”

“I know.”

Sophie was nine now.

Old enough to know adults lied when they said fine.

She sat beside him.

Dana said:

“We are still working.”

“Thank you.”

“Don’t tell anyone outside immediate family.”

“I won’t.”

He hung up.

Sophie stared.

“What happened?”

Taylor had always promised himself he would never build hope on uncertainty for her.

But she deserved truth too.

“I learned something about Mom.”

Sophie went completely still.

“What?”

“She was alive after she disappeared.”

His daughter’s mouth opened.

No sound.

Taylor continued carefully.

“We do not know what happened after.”

Sophie’s eyes filled.

“But she didn’t leave because she didn’t want us?”

Taylor broke.

“No.”

He pulled her against him.

“No, sweetheart.”

Sophie began sobbing.

Taylor held her.

“She loved you.”

“How do you know?”

Taylor closed his eyes.

“Because she disappeared trying to protect you.”

Sophie cried harder.

For seven years she had carried a wound nobody could see.

Not absence.

Rejection.

That night, some of it changed shape.

Not healed.

Changed.

Victoria stayed away from Taylor for the next two weeks except when investigators required contact.

He appreciated that.

The board suspended Gregory in absentia.

Victoria disclosed Meridian publicly.

Hawthorne Global stock collapsed thirty-one percent in two days.

Investors panicked.

Several directors demanded Victoria resign.

She refused.

Then announced an independent restitution fund financed partly from Hawthorne family holdings.

Analysts called it reckless.

Victoria sold one of her private properties to fund the initial payments.

Taylor saw the headline.

He felt nothing.

Money could not restore Megan.

But perhaps it could keep another family from fighting a corporation alone.

Then Gregory resurfaced.

Not physically.

A video.

Sent to Victoria.

He sat inside an unknown room.

No visible windows.

Clean shirt.

Calm.

“Victoria.”

Taylor watched beside Dana.

Gregory continued.

“If you are seeing this, you finally found Richard’s tapes.”

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

Gregory smiled.

“Your father always confused recording people with controlling them.”

He leaned closer.

“You want Megan Hayes.”

Taylor’s heart stopped.
