Cold-weather test reports.
Historical complaint.
Recent emails.
The chairman’s own language appeared on screen.
His face changed.
Not much.
Enough.
He said:
“These are being taken out of context.”
The single father looked toward the investor.
The old man whispered:
“Everyone likes that phrase.”
The billionaire heard.
Almost smiled.
The chairman continued.
“The legacy issue was mitigated.”
“Prove it.”
“We have testing.”
“Raw data.”
Silence.
“Send the raw data.”
The chairman said:
“I don’t have it personally.”
“Then the target company can provide it.”
“This delay could trigger a break fee.”
“One hundred eighty million.”
A director gasped.
The billionaire knew.
“I’m aware.”
The chairman leaned closer.
“You are risking one hundred eighty million dollars based on a seven-year-old complaint from a disgruntled former employee.”
The single father became still.
The billionaire’s voice cooled.
“Be careful.”
The chairman saw him in the background.
Recognition took seconds.
Then contempt.
“That’s him?”
The father said nothing.
The chairman laughed.
“You dragged a garage mechanic into confidential board deliberations?”
The billionaire looked at the father.
Then at the screen.
“He spent six years in diagnostic validation for the company we are acquiring.”
“He authored the original defect reports.”
“He was terminated after refusing to approve modified test conditions.”
The chairman waved one hand.
“According to him.”
The investor spoke for the first time.
“According to records in my possession.”
The chairman froze.
He recognized the voice.
The old investor moved into view.
The board became silent.
The chairman’s expression collapsed for perhaps half a second.
“Sir.”
The investor smiled without warmth.
“Good morning.”
The chairman swallowed.
“We were not told you would be on the call.”
“Neither was I.”
The investor leaned on his cane.
“I was told quite a few other things though.”
He held up the recent email printout.
“Would you like to explain ‘avoid reopening legacy cold-weather concerns’?”
The chairman’s face hardened.
“That message concerned diligence scope.”
“Yes.”
“The concern was considered closed.”
“By whom?”
“Our technical advisers.”
The billionaire said:
“Name them.”
The chairman hesitated.
She repeated:
“Which independent technical adviser reviewed the original negative-twenty-degree data?”
