The first thing that hit the airport tarmac was a white leather boarding folder.

The second was a diamond-studded pen that rolled across the concrete and came to rest beneath the polished shoe of a fifty-five-year-old pilot who had just slapped the documents out of a Black woman's hands.

"You're just a servant! Get away from my jet!"

His voice cut through the afternoon air, loud enough for the flight attendants standing near the boarding stairs to hear. Behind him, a magnificent white Bombardier Global 7500 private jet stood beneath the bright New York sky, its long wings gleaming in the sunlight, its polished fuselage reflecting the terminal windows, and its boarding stairs extended beside the forward entrance.

The woman didn't scream.

She didn't bend immediately to collect the papers.

And she didn't step backward when the pilot moved toward her.

Instead, she stood perfectly still, studying him with the calm, penetrating expression of someone who had just discovered a problem much larger than an ordinary misunderstanding.

She was forty-two years old, exceptionally beautiful, with flawless deep-brown skin, captivating dark eyes, and a tall, statuesque figure that gave her an extraordinary presence even when she wasn't speaking. She wore a breathtaking black strapless evening gown with a structured corset bodice, a fitted silhouette, and an extravagant feathered mermaid hem that brushed the concrete as she moved.

Long black satin opera gloves extended above her elbows, and an elaborate sculptural silver-crystal headpiece swept across her elegant updo, catching the sunlight in brilliant flashes.

Around her wrist glittered a diamond-encrusted Rolex.

The watch alone cost more than the pilot earned in an ordinary year.

But he wasn't looking at the watch.

He was looking at her face, her dress, and the fact that she was a Black woman standing in front of a private aircraft he believed she had no right to approach.

A flight attendant stood behind him in the open aircraft doorway, her hands folded neatly against her navy uniform. A younger first officer watched from beside the stairs, while two ground employees stood near a luggage cart, uncertain whether they were supposed to intervene.

The pilot pointed toward the private terminal.

"Service employees use the rear entrance. You should've been briefed before coming out here."

The woman lowered her gaze toward the papers scattered on the concrete.

Then she looked back at him.

"Those are my documents."

He gave a short, contemptuous laugh.

"Then pick them up."

For a moment, the ground employees looked at one another.

The woman remained still.

Then she slowly raised her left wrist and examined the diamond Rolex.

The pilot's expression sharpened.

"Are you listening to me?"
