"And nothing about my appearance or the documents you slapped away established a safety threat."

The regional operations director stepped closer.

The CEO looked toward him.

"I want the assigned crew relieved from this aircraft while the conduct and flight authorization are reviewed."

The director nodded.

"Understood."

The captain stared.

"You can't do that."

The CEO looked back at him.

She said nothing.

The regional director answered.

"The aircraft operator can remove crew members from this assignment, and the company responsible for the flight will determine employment and contractual action under the applicable procedures."

The captain's face reddened.

He looked toward the terminal security supervisor.

Then toward the pilot's own first officer.

For a moment, he seemed on the verge of arguing.

Instead, he asked whether he could return to the cockpit to collect his belongings.

The director said that would be arranged under supervision after the relevant records were secured.

The first officer stepped forward.

"Sir, what about the aircraft?"

The regional director looked toward him.

"It won't depart under the current release."

The younger man went pale.

The senior flight attendant began speaking rapidly.

She insisted she'd only followed the captain's instructions.

Then she claimed she hadn't recognized the CEO.

The Black woman turned toward her.

"You didn't have to recognize me to treat me with dignity."

The attendant stopped talking.

For the first time, her polished confidence disappeared.

The CEO looked toward the entire group.

"Every person assigned to this departure who participated in the misconduct or approved the unauthorized paperwork is being removed from the operation pending review."

The director nodded.

The captain looked toward the aircraft.

His shoulders dropped.

The luxurious cabin he'd expected to command that afternoon was no longer his to enter freely.

And the woman he'd ordered away was standing exactly where she belonged.

The ground coordinator approached with his tablet.

His face was tense.

"Ma'am, I want to explain something."

The CEO looked toward him.

"Go ahead."

He glanced at the senior aviation executive.

Then spoke.

"I received the flight release through our scheduling system. It was marked as executive priority."

She nodded.

"Who entered it?"

He hesitated.

The regional director stepped closer.

The coordinator looked down at the tablet.

Then answered.

"The request came through an account associated with your finance division."

The CEO's expression didn't change.

But the senior aviation executive went still.

The coordinator continued.

"The passenger manifest was updated twice this morning."

The CEO looked toward him.

"Updated how?"

He swallowed.

"The original version had your name as the authorized principal."

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then he added.

"The second version removed it."

The CEO felt a cold weight settle in her stomach.
