But he also knew that a professional disagreement about a loading procedure shouldn't end with someone being told they were too stupid to work near an aircraft.

The CEO felt her jaw tighten.

"Did you report any of this?"

He nodded.

"Once."

"What happened?"

He looked down.

"My supervisor said the captain was an important client representative."

For a moment, the CEO said nothing.

Then she asked whether the employee knew how to access the airport operator's independent reporting process.

He shook his head.

She explained that the terminal supervisor could provide the proper channel and that any complaint should be documented without retaliation.

She didn't promise to intervene in an employer's decisions she didn't control.

But she made it clear that she wanted the incident investigated properly.

The young man looked relieved.

Then he glanced toward her gown.

For a moment, he smiled.

"Ma'am, can I ask you something?"

She nodded.

"Of course."

"Did you really own that airplane the whole time?"

The CEO laughed softly.

"Through my company, yes."

His eyes widened.

She smiled.

"And you were the first person here who treated me like I belonged."

The young man looked embarrassed.

"I was just giving you your papers."

She nodded.

"Exactly."

Inside the terminal, the CFO arrived at two-fifty-eight.

He was fifty-three years old, white American, with silver-streaked hair, an expensive dark suit, and the practiced confidence of a man who believed a financial title placed him near the top of every room.

He carried a slim leather briefcase and a phone that seemed permanently attached to his hand.

Two men followed him.

One was an outside acquisition adviser.

The other represented a private investment group involved in the pending logistics transaction.

All three had arrived expecting to board the Global 7500.

Instead, they found the aircraft's departure on hold and the assigned crew in a private conference room.

The CFO stopped at the reception desk.

"What happened to the airplane?"

The receptionist explained that the flight was undergoing authorization review.

He frowned.

"On whose instructions?"

"The aircraft operator and the authorized company principal."

His expression tightened.

"Which principal?"

Before she could answer, a voice came from behind him.

"Me."

He turned.

The Black CEO stood several feet away.

Her black gown moved softly across the marble floor.

The feathered hem brushed the polished surface.

The silver-crystal headpiece glittered beneath the terminal lights.

And her dark eyes remained fixed on the man who controlled the company's financial systems.

For a moment, the CFO looked genuinely shocked.

Then he recovered.

"You're here."

She nodded.

"Apparently."

He glanced toward her watch.

Then toward the two men behind him.

For a fraction of a second, his smile looked forced.
