Maybe something extra for staying after hours.

She would thank him.

Then move on.

Simple.

Her assistant arrived at 7:45 carrying the morning acquisition packet.

The mother took it without opening.

Her company had closed on three parcels the previous day.

One was the commercial strip west of the city.

Eighteen individual tenants.

Small automotive businesses.

A plumbing supplier.

Two storage buildings.

A tire warehouse.

One restaurant.

An old landscaping company.

The site would be redeveloped into a mixed-use complex with retail, offices, apartments, and a parking structure.

Projected cost: hundreds of millions.

Projected return: excellent.

The mother had seen maps.

Parcel numbers.

Rent rolls.

Not faces.

That was normal.

Large projects required abstraction.

No executive could personally know every tenant in every acquisition.

At least that was what she believed before the black luxury SUV turned into the gravel drive beside the auto shop.

The teenager leaned forward.

“There.”

The mother looked up.

The garage was smaller than she expected.

Old two-bay building.

A third makeshift work area beneath an awning.

Faded exterior paint.

Cars waiting along one side.

A pickup with its hood open.

A man kneeling at the front wheel of her daughter’s sedan.

The same mechanic from the night before.

He had apparently decided to recheck the lug torque before she returned to school.

Her daughter opened the door before the driver could reach it.

“Wait.”

the mother said.

Too late.

The teenager climbed out.

The mechanic looked over.

Recognition softened his face.

“Morning.”

The girl smiled.

“Morning.”

“Any vibration?”

“No.”

“Pulling?”

“No.”

“Pressure stayed good.”

He stood and tapped the tire.

“You’re fine.”

Then he saw the mother.

Everything about the situation changed.

She was wearing an ivory pantsuit beneath a camel coat.

Polished.

Controlled.

Assistant behind her.

Luxury SUV.

Driver.

The mechanic immediately understood the girl came from money.

Not just comfortable money.

Serious money.

The teenager said:

“Mom, this is him.”

Her voice carried more emotion than the mother expected.

“He fixed it when nobody else stopped.”

The mechanic wiped his hands on a shop rag.

“She was stranded.”

“That was enough.”

The mother approached.

“I wanted to thank you personally.”

He nodded once.

“No problem.”

“I’d also like to pay you.”

“She tried.”

The teenager looked at him.

“You make that sound annoying.”

“It was.”

The mother almost smiled.

“How much?”

“No charge.”

“That isn’t acceptable.”

“It’s already done.”

“You used a tire you were saving for your daughter.”

He glanced toward his own child through the office window.
