“What do you mean you can't see?”
“Everything was black.”
“Now?”
“I can see the lamp.”
“Your hand?”
She nodded.
“Dad, stop freaking out.”
Impossible.
He called Dr. Singh’s emergency number.
Within ninety minutes they were at the hospital.
Nora came.
Laura came too after Daniel called without thinking.
All four sat inside a waiting room beneath fluorescent lights.
Dr. Singh examined Chloe.
Retinal function stable.
The episode was likely temporary loss of adaptation after waking suddenly in darkness, something associated with the inherited condition but not evidence of rapid deterioration.
Daniel nearly collapsed with relief.
Chloe looked annoyed.
“Can we go home?”
Dr. Singh smiled.
“Yes.”
In the parking garage, Laura stood beside Nora.
Daniel watched them.
Laura said something.
Nora answered.
Then, unexpectedly, Nora reached out.
Laura took her hand.
Not forgiveness.
Not full reconciliation.
Contact.
Daniel looked at Chloe.
She was watching too.
“Mom looks sad.”
“Yes.”
“Are you still mad at her?”
“Yes.”
Chloe nodded.
“Can you be mad and love somebody?”
Daniel thought of marriage.
Divorce.
Parenthood.
Family.
“Unfortunately, yes.”
Chloe sighed.
“That sounds exhausting.”
“It is.”
They walked toward the car.
Nora called:
“Daniel.”
He turned.
Laura stood beside her.
Nora smiled faintly.
“Can we all get breakfast?”
Daniel looked at Laura.
She looked terrified to hope.
He answered:
“Sure.”
At four in the morning, they sat inside an all-night diner.
Chloe ate pancakes.
Nora drank coffee.
Laura barely touched anything.
Daniel watched them.
A family no one would have designed.
Ex-husband.
Ex-wife.
Nine-year-old daughter.
Twenty-four-year-old daughter no one had known existed.
Blindness.
Secrets.
Anger.
Pancake syrup.
Life was less elegant than people pretended.
Maybe that was why it sometimes survived.
Nora eventually moved into her own apartment downtown.
The decision hurt Chloe more than Daniel expected.
“You're leaving?”
Nora laughed.
“I’m moving twelve minutes away.”
“That's leaving.”
“I’ll be here every Wednesday.”
“And Saturday?”
“We’ll negotiate.”
Chloe folded her arms exactly like Laura.
Daniel saw Nora notice too.
They both smiled.
Nora found an apartment close to transit and work.
Daniel helped assemble furniture.
She reminded him six times not to reorganize things without telling her.
He moved one chair.
She hit his shin with the cane accidentally.
Or so she claimed.
Laura came to help unpack.
