Doc looked toward Ellie.

"Does that make sense, sweetheart?"

The little girl nodded.

"Yes."

"Good."

He smiled.

"Now, would you like to see it?"

Ellie's eyes widened.

"YES!"

Several people laughed.

Doc turned toward the wall.

He placed his hand on the garage-door switch.

Then he pressed it.

The heavy steel door began rising.

At first, Ellie could see only the lower edge of something black.

Then a polished wheel came into view.

Then another.

Morning sunlight spilled across the concrete floor, catching the chrome of an extraordinary custom three-wheeled Harley-style motorcycle standing in the center of the bay.

Its front section was gleaming black, with a broad windshield, polished engine covers, and carefully restored details that made it unmistakably resemble Doc's beloved Harley.

But the most remarkable part was attached beside the motorcycle.

A low accessible passenger platform held a specially designed child-sized seat upholstered in soft pink material. The seat included carefully integrated supportive features, and its arrangement had been designed around the medical and technical consultations that had guided the project.

A small embroidered crown decorated the upper cushion.

Nearby rested a matching pink compartment designed to hold Ellie's favorite belongings.

And beside the seat, secured for display, sat a tiny teddy bear wearing a miniature riding helmet.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Ellie stared.

Her mouth opened.

Then she pointed.

"Mama..."

Rachel covered her mouth.

The little girl's voice trembled.

"Mama, that's my motorcycle."

Mark stood behind the wheelchair, his eyes filling with tears.

Doc watched Ellie's face.

He had imagined this moment hundreds of times.

But nothing had prepared him for the expression now spreading across her features.

It was wonder.

Pure, unguarded wonder.

Ellie slowly lifted one hand.

"Is that really for me?"

Doc knelt beside her.

"Yes, sweetheart."

She looked toward the pink seat.

"With a place for Mr. Bumblebee?"

Doc nodded.

"Of course."

Ellie stared at the little helmet.

Then she laughed.

It was a bright, delighted sound that filled the entire garage.

Rachel began crying.

Mark placed one hand on her shoulder.

The family members behind them smiled through tears.

And Doc Brennan, the enormous tattooed biker who had spent eight years believing he had failed his daughter, lowered his head because he could no longer keep his own emotions under control.

Ellie reached toward him.

"Harley man?"

Doc looked up.
