Julian had been alive without a name.

Paper had reversed two lives.

The federal investigation expanded.

So did press.

There was no way to keep Julian secret after court filings.

The first photograph of him leaving hospital in a baseball cap and borrowed coat triggered media chaos.

DEAD BOSTON HEIR FOUND ALIVE AFTER 12 YEARS

DUCA BROTHER SURVIVED CRASH

FEDERAL PROBE TARGETS BILLIONAIRE CHAIRMAN

Adrian hated every headline.

Julian hated cameras.

Mia thought it was exciting until reporters appeared outside Grace’s apartment.

Then she cried.

Adrian’s team moved Grace and family temporarily to a secure hotel at Grace’s request, with Denise accompanying.

Not Adrian’s mansion.

Grace wanted distance.

He respected.

When Grace was discharged, Adrian visited.

He brought no flowers.

Denise had texted Elena that Grace was allergic.

Instead he brought a folder.

Grace looked wary.

“What is that?”

“Options.”

That word mattered.

Adrian sat across kitchen table in temporary suite.

“Mia at school?”

“Denise took.”

“Lily?”

“Asleep.”

Adrian placed folder.

“First page is wages Belgrave failed to pay.”

“Independent audit estimate.”

Grace stared amount.

“Second is medical coverage.”

“Third is employment choice.”

She looked.

“You’re firing me?”

“No.”

“You can return to work directly for household with salary increase, paid sick leave, benefits, fixed hours.”

“Or transfer to Duca Meridian facilities department.”

“Day schedule.”

“Or take severance equal to eighteen months pay and leave.”

Grace stared.

“No condition?”

“None.”

“No confidentiality?”

“No.”

“No promise not sue?”

“No.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You expect lawsuit.”

“I expect you should have lawyer.”

“I arranged list of independent legal aid and private attorneys.”

“I’m paying consultation through neutral fund.”

“Your choice.”

Grace looked at him.

“Why?”

Adrian answered honestly.

“Because my system hurt you.”

“Your system?”

“I hired Belgrave.”

“You didn’t tell Kettering to threaten us.”

“No.”

“But I paid company that rewarded it.”

“Then never looked.”

Grace looked toward sleeping Lily.

Adrian continued.

“Help cannot be another way I control what happens next.”

Grace’s eyes filled slightly.

She looked down.

“I want day job.”

“Facilities?”

“Yes.”

“I want evenings with girls.”

Adrian nodded.

“You’ll interview for role.”

Grace’s head snapped.

“Interview?”

“Yes.”

“If you want guaranteed placement, I can provide equivalent household job.”

“If you want facilities position with promotion path, I don’t want people saying it was gift.”

Grace stared.

Then smiled faintly.

“That sounds annoying.”

“I’ve been told.”

She took facilities option.

She passed interview.

Six months later, Grace Harper became building services coordinator at Duca Meridian headquarters.

Two years later, assistant facilities manager.

Eventually much more.

But that came later.

Mia returned to school.

Adrian paid nothing directly to her beyond settlement fund negotiated for family.

He wanted to buy her every toy in Boston.

Elena stopped him.

“You are not turning guilt into presents.”

“She carried a vacuum with baby.”

“I know.”

“Can I at least—”

“No.”

“Birthday?”

“Normal.”

He sighed.

On Mia’s seventh birthday, Adrian gave her one book and a child-sized astronomy kit because she told him she liked stars.

Mia looked at telescope.

“Does it cost a lot?”
