Large tenants submitted service ratings.

Enough complaints could reduce hours or remove individual workers from certain storefronts.

Everyone who worked there knew which tenants mattered most.

The owner opened the folder again.

“Your name?”

The maintenance worker gave it.

She flipped through several pages.

Found the facilities section.

His name appeared.

Seventeen years of service.

No safety violations.

Three recent tenant complaints.

All from the same luxury boutique.

Her eyes lifted.

The blonde woman saw the page.

“That’s confidential.”

The owner looked at her.

“It’s my property file.”

Silence.

The owner read.

Failure to respond quickly enough to storefront spill.

Unprofessional attitude when asked to remove delivery debris.

Refusal to clean employee-only storage area during customer hours.

She looked at the maintenance worker.

“You refused?”

He swallowed.

“The chemicals they wanted removed weren’t mine.”

“What chemicals?”

“Store display adhesive.”

The blonde woman scoffed.

“It was trash.”

The maintenance worker looked at the owner.

“Containers had warning labels. I told them disposal had to go through their vendor.”

The property manager’s expression shifted.

He had not known that detail.

The owner turned to him.

“Did anyone investigate before the complaint was placed in his file?”

The manager hesitated.

The answer was obvious.

“No.”

The owner nodded slowly.

She closed the folder.

The incident had just become larger.

The blonde woman sensed it too.

“This is ridiculous.”

The owner turned.

“I agree again.”

“You’re going through years of paperwork because some cleaner got offended?”

The owner stared.

The blonde woman realized too late that she had done it again.

Not cleaner.

Maintenance professional.

Seventeen years.

A man old enough to be her father.

Standing there holding the handle of a cart she had kicked.

The owner asked:

“Do you know his name?”

Silence.

The blonde woman glanced at him.

She did not.

The owner nodded.

“That tells me more than the drink.”

The blonde woman’s face hardened.

Then fear became anger.

“You can’t threaten our lease over a personal argument.”

The owner looked down at the renewal packet.

“I haven’t threatened anything.”

“You basically just did.”

“No.”

She held up the folder.

“I said I was reviewing it.”

“That review is supposed to be about rent and expansion.”

“And operations.”

“This has nothing to do with our lease.”

The owner looked toward the property manager.

“Does the lease contain a tenant conduct clause?”

“Yes.”

The blonde woman looked sharply at him.

The owner continued.

“Employee treatment?”

The manager nodded.

“Shared-space interference?”

“Yes.”

“Harassment of contracted workers?”

“Yes.”
